The One And Only Akita Book
I was absolutely stunned when I saw my first Akita -- pronounced AH’ kee ta by
the Japanese and Ah Kee’ ta by most Americans.
These magnificent imposing dogs’ great heads make them look like young bears –
or foxes -- while their large-boned bodies and curly tails say they’re descended
from Spitz-type dogs – the kind that existed about 15,000 years ago during the
Stone Age.
In 1931, after realizing that the Akita was fast becoming extinct, Japan declared
the Japanese Akita a Japanese National Treasure.
In fact, the Akita has had a bumpy ride in terms of survival as a breed.
