Born in Ejea de los Caballeros a small town near Zaragoza, in the north of Spain,Fernando Perez is a new revelation in the Guitar World, he plays Western Classical,Jazz, Flamenco, Hawaiian, Traditional Blues, Latin, Indian, Afrikan, as well as other styles from the latest contemporary to the deep traditions.
He combines it all with his originality and interesting view of the world to create a smooth and fresh music that can not be classified.
Choosing different instruments such as Resophonic, Hawaiian lap steel, Indian or Flamenco guitars as the color of his sound, we have old and new music performed in old although new instruments that put the soul into ease. All this along with a wide background in music and culture makes this artist a wonderful choice for those who want to give their musical taste a new flavor.
In a lifetime odyssey Fernando has dedicated his time since the age of seven to learn about music and cultures, studying in world known centers, traveling to many places and performing with the most curious people.
Born in the town of Ejea de los Caballeros, Zaragoza, Fernando''s interest in music begun at the age of seven.
His first contact with classical music was throughout the conservatory of Spain, he studied in the ones located in Zaragoza and Navarra. After these came numerous private instructors and music centers such as ''Instituto de Musica'' in Zaragoza, ''Escuela Cardiel'', ''L''Aula de Musica'' in Barcelona, ''Escuela de Musica Creativa'' in Madrid, ''Musicians Institute'' in Hollywood, California and Maharaja Sawai Mansingh Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Jaipur, India.
In these centers he studied classical and contemporary guitar in such styles as Jazz, Funk, Blues, etc, as well as harmony, composition, arangements, orchestration, ear training, rhythm, sound engineering, production and other special courses such as Film Scoring, Ethnic music, Jazz in the 90s, advanced ear training, etc.
But his interest took him to learn more directly from artits and their cultures, traveling to different places to not only learn but to experience the spirit of the different musical styles.
Nowadays you can realize this experience throughout the talent of this artist who has performed with artists from such exotic places as Hawai''i, Cuba, Jamaica, West Africa, Japan, South, Central and North America, Spain, France, Ireland, India, etc.
The guitar has always been his passion, an instrument which he explores in its many forms, starting by the spanish classical guitar, acoustic, electric, Dobros or resophonic guitars and continuing with ohter interesting ones such as african, hawaiian ki Ho''alu (Slack Key) and Kika Kila (Steel Guiatr), the ''slide'' style from Mississippi, Flamenco, or
even the curious way of playing guitar in hindustani music found in India.
He also explores new horizons reflected throughout his arrangements and compositions based on instruments of different cultures, examples are the japanese Koto, chinese Pipa, or african Ngoni and Kora.
Fernando Perez presents his original compositions based on the music of different cultures of the world. This CD takes us on the journey the guitar made around the globe, adapting itself to the musical necessities of the cultures in order to reflect the sounds of every people. You can listen and read about these instruments at the same time that you enjoy the echoes of remote corners of the planet.
"Our journey begins in Spain, ''Por Bulerias'' is a palo (style) of flamenco music which reflects the naughtiness of its meaning -burlerias (mocking). Next we arrive to Africa hearing the sound of the beat we dance the whole night long in an ''African Dance'', from here africans where taken to U.S.A. where they gave birth to a new style, the Blues. ''Blues March'' is the blend between two cultures settled in New Orleans; african and french; echoing the howling of the blues with a marching beat. This is followed by a country-blues piece called ''Train Song''.
''Friends'' is a contemporary piece dedicated to every friend made along the journey and ''Country Dance'' is a bluegrass style created by irish people who settled in U.S.A. and gave origin to country music.
''Farewell'' is another contemporary piece with a touch from Ireland, which talks about the many friends we had to say... farewell.
As we go down south we arrive to Mexico where ''Son Jarocho'' comes from, a folk style from Veracruz reflecting the blend of africans, spaniards and native mexicans.
''Tango'' represents the argentinean style with a light touch of an habanera original from Cuba, giving to the sensuality of the style a laid back feeling. Now ''Samba'' is heard as we arrive to Brazil, representing the sweetness of the light-hearted brasileros (brazilians).
In the middle of the Pacific ocean we find the music of the islands of Hawai''i, ''Hawaiian Entertainment" and ''Aloha'' remind us of the hawaiian philosophy shaka (hang loose).
As we finish crossing the ocean we find Japan where ''Ame'' (rain) comes from, a traditional piece for Koto, its notes show us the sense of respect and honor characteristic of our japanese friends.
Continuing westward around the world we get to China where we can hear the rumors of the ''Flowing Water''; a traditional piece for the chinese Pipa; telling us to -stay simple.
In India, we enjoy ''Madhuvanti'' in its alap, jod and jhala; the first three movements of Indian classical music; from the indian raga of the same name and described - beautiful as the goddess of love.
This is followed by ''Alhamdu lil-laah'' (praising God) in a classical arabic music style.
And following the route indian travelers walked to become the gipsy people we end up in Spain, the same place we started our journey. Here we wind down to the sweet sound of ''Santa Maria'' representing the troubles of a good man on board of this spanish vessel... Fernando Perez."
