With the gears amd springs of latin jazz, afro beat, township bop, and even old-world klezmer working together, Contraption is a rhythmic feat of human soul-mechanics.
Most of these musicians met while playing in the seminal "skafrocubanjazz" band Yeska. These top notch players have since gone on to tour/record with such shamelessly droppable names as:The Beastie Boys, Ozomatli, Blackalicious, Money Mark, Quetzal, Fishbone, Prince Buster, Plastilina Mosh, Morning Wood, Future Pigeon, etc.
Contraption is a quintet consisting of:Jeff Mikusky on piano, Clinton Cameron on drums, Alfredo Ortiz on percussion, Dante Pascuzzo on bass, and Seth "Slim" Zwerling on trumpet. For their first recording, Eviction Cumbia, several friends generously lent their considerable talents: Ulises Bella (Ozomatli), Liam Philpot (Future Pigeon), Jose Espinoza (DeLa Esquina), and Walter Miranda (Cava).
The long association of these players and the overall joy they feel making music together is obvious in the sound they create. With an adherence to danceable rhythms, and an open forum for individual exploration and improvisation, Contraption has the ability to stimulate both the mind and the body. Enjoy.
