Details:
“Hot August night, early 21st century, a dream begins to weave itself into the fabric of reality, Musical Reality. The weavers, three musicians. Upon the loom, colorful threads of ancient Indian Ragas, Balinese bronze gamelan modalities, soulful skeins of Jazz roots, rhythms and riffs, stems and branches of classical European harmonies. These fibers, deeply planted in the cosmology of the dreamers, combine, intertwine and spread vast their tentacles ‘BEYOND THE REACH OF TIME’.”

So read the liner notes to Mindia Devi Klein’s most recent release, an Indo-Jazz experience featuring three musicians of rare and unique sensibility, tremendously creative minds and very finely honed musical skills. As always the sound is totally acoustic and about 95% live. Recorded at Prairie Sun Studios in Northern California and mixed by Grammy award winning engineer Oz Fritz, this album is beautiful in every sense, technical and other wise.

‘BEYOND THE REACH OF TIME’ features Mindia Devi playing a full range of Indian bansuri flutes (from low C to high E), silver flute, Balinese gamelan, African sacred bells and other assorted percussion; Joshua Rosen on acoustic grande piano; Kash Killion on acoustic bass, cello and Indian sarangi; and from Calcutta, Debopriyo Sarkar on tabla.

Joshua Rosen, professor of jazz piano and composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston is one of those rare players whose access to musical thought and imagination transcend genre entirely while revealing the essence of every idiom that comes pouring through his fingers. Kash Killion is an incredibly eclectic player who met Mindia while playing his bass for the Ali Akbar College Orchestra during a “Meet the Composer” concert rehearsal of Ustad Khan’s music. He has played with many interesting and diverse jazz and Latin jazz groups including the Sun Ra Arkestra and the Cuban based Orchestra Moderna. Debopriyo Sarkar is brilliant young tabla wizard who has performed with some of the greatest Indian classical musicians while also venturing into newer territory with the likes of the Kronos String Quartet among others.

Together these three musician-composers have created a musical journey which spans a truly vast spectrum from sassy, sexy Indo-Jazz bansuri burn to deeply meditative multi-bansuri, piano, gamelan harmonies to utterly outside, inside jazz cosmic flight to what might be described as a kind of Indo-Bali-Jazz impressionism.

This is contemporary music stretching, arching, reaching and moving far beyond categorization into a cosmic soundscape of utterly original dimensions. Certainly Mindia’s most audacious and complex achievement thus far.
