Who is Noah''s Dog? Well, the world''s first underdog, that''s who. It''s also Long Island singer/songwriter Kevin Caffrey''s follow-up to 2000''s Packaged To Play. Recorded in 2004 and 2005, the new album features a wide arrange of styles, from the infectiously upbeat "Slow Motion," to the sprawling progressive rock title track, to the Indian-tinged, laidback "It''ll Never Happen Again." In June 2006, songs from the album began to garner airplay on the "Local Insomniac Music" program on WUSB 90.1FM on Long Island. Kevin is currently out promoting the album by playing shows at venues throughout Long Island, including a recent performance at Pisces Cafe in Babylon.

Discussing the album''s origin, Kevin explains on his website: "Years ago I thought of what it would''ve been like if Noah, in all his efforts to get two of every animal on his Ark, actually forgot about his own dog. Left on his own, Noah''s dog would truly become the original "underdog," and that''s how many of the songs on the album are linked--they all have something to do with underdogs. Whether the characters in these songs have gotten into the situations themselves, or it just so happens that they are simply playing the cards that life dealt them, I really feel these songs are "of the people." My favorite band, Yes, has a line in one of their songs ["Nous Sommes Du Soleil"] that goes, "This life seems like a fight," and while quite simple, that line rings so true. This is an album for people who have to get up every day and face different challenges--and I suspect that''s just about everyone."

It comes as no surprise that this story would spring from Kevin''s head. Playing and independently recording music since the age of 13, with numerous albums and live performances to his credit, Caffrey is boldly embracing the title of "musical underdog." The music of Noah''s Dog display''s his knack for creating evocative moods with the combination of lush keyboards, warm acoustic guitars, and ambient textures, but it also takes a step forward with injecting world music influences into some songs, and also maybe even creating, what could only be explained, as a "slightly off" style with "If You Should Ever," -- imagine what "acoustic jazz-funk-folk rock" would sound like, and this is what you get.

Caffrey''s lyrics also remain intriguing ("I still feel you pulsing/I carve a silhouette of you in my sleep" [from "Original Sin]; "I''ll hurt you if you hurt me/why that''s so it''s no mystery/it''s just as true as the days are long and cold" [from "Things To Come]).

Yet, they are also ultimately hopeful.

When he sings, "and i''m not gonna stop," throughout the album''s penultimate song, "These Days," the listener will get the feeling that Kevin is not only speaking for himself, but for everyone out there that needs to--every now and then--really remind themselves to never stop believing in the things they love to do, regardless of the success that comes from it. True success is achieved in the mind. Once you can do that, there''s really no stopping you.
