CAROLINE LYNN

Caroline''s background in jazz and improvised musics, classical voice, indian vocal techniques, folk and medieval music, colour her interpretation of both traditional and contemporary material. Her extensive performance career has spanned the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India and Shanghai.

UK born singer and composer, Caroline Lynn’s career includes international performances in both jazz and world music genres. London trained (Guildhall School of Music and Drama) in Jazz and Performance, her passion for improvisation â€" traditional, decorative and contemporary styles â€" first formed on the London jazz and festival scene of the 90’s, permeates her work.

The Shaman''s Kiss CD was nominated for Best Vocal Album in the 2003 Australian Jazz Awards, and has established Caroline as a gifted, original artist and composer. One of the few singers to perform as a SIMA artist (Sydney Improvised Music Association), she displays a fluency in multi-improvised contexts and asymmetrical meters which characterise her style.

Moving to Sydney, Australia in 1995 facilitated her specialisation in aspects of world music traditions. She began a period of study in medieval music, and Indian raga with renowned sarod player Ashok Roy, and classical voice with Sue Falk. Subsequently invited to JIVI, Mumbai, she studied North Indian Classical vocal techniques with guru Dhanshree Pandit Rai, and gave performances at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi and several major hotels across India. Her ongoing interest in integrating traditional music styles into a contemporary context led to her collaboration in 2001 with internationally renowned Australian pianist Mark Isaacs. Described as ‘utterly beguiling’ (Sydney Morning Herald), their portrayal of the beautiful medieval Sephardic song tradition (Judeo/Spanish), was performed for a VIP audience at a unique concert at The Great Synagogue, Sydney.

In a jazz context, Caroline has worked extensively throughout the UK with her own groups and artists such as Paul Malsom and Trium, Roland Perrin, Dill Katz, John Piper, Tristan Harris, Les Booth. She was also featured as a soloist with the Guildhall Big Band touring Scotland and major London venues (Barbican Centre, Festival Hall and Bass Clef). MORE REVIEWS

“This expansive tapestry of jazz, world music, tabla beats, Gaelic dance, displaced rhythms and free-flowing evocative lines from the Sydney vocalist is way outside conventional jazz boundaries...Behind the understated quality in this blend of originals, Spanish song and pieces from Mike Nock and Ralph Towner, there is a riot of improvisation where the familiar is torn down and refashioned into new and unexpected shapes.” Leon Gettler, The Age, April 03

“Lynn is scholarly in a completely relaxed way, and often powerfully expressive” John Clare, Metropolitan, Sydney Morning Herald 12/7/03

“Caroline is a remarkable singer who is breaking new ground. Here’s a chance to hear her and cohorts make a little history”. Barry Morris, Daily Telegraph 23/7/03

“... she takes us on a journey from the yearning intensity of medieval Spanish tradition...the wild cauldron of witch-hunts...to dream-like worlds of uncluttered, almost unstructured freedom...” Lynn presents a rich, mature voice of range and technical quality without which this material would be difficult, if not impossible to address”. John Swords, Jazz Action Society Newsletter 07/03
