Cassard: Get This

the CD:

Seems like everybody loves Get This, the debut CD from CASSARD (rhymes with hard). Underground Network calls it “magically eclectic.” Taxi calls it, “Cool...a gem.” The folks at MTV loved it so much they licensed all 12 originals for a top-rated TV series.

Get This is a romp through the musical styles of the ever-hip 70s with the added wisdom of the new millennium. Serious on the surface but playful underneath and loaded with irony. Toss it in the CD player and shake into a tasty, original music potion (Love Potion #10).

Get This is the brainchild of Robert Cassard, the songwriter/producer who, at age 18, produced the college radio hit Over The Line. The tyranny of record company economics soon forced him into jingle and commercial music purgatory where he worked with some big names but remained musically unfulfilled.

Despite Cassard’s experience with big productions in big studios, Get This was recorded on vintage 8-track analog equipment in Cassard’s garage. As he recalls, “We bought the 8-track as a demo tool, for rehearsal tapes. But the first song we recorded knocked us out. The sound was in your face, and the recording had a rawness and density that reminded us of albums we loved way back when. A lot of our favorite artists were stuck with only 4 tracks; we figured we could still do something very cool with 8!”

Get This is an hommage to the music Cassard grew up on. This sonically dense CD makes you want to grab your headphones. The guitars are powerful yet intricate, the lyrics insightful, the vocals melodic and the harmonies thick. While Cassard plays everything on Get This, there are tasty guest vocals by Teeka Ballas of Uluteka, Doug Rouhier of Roux, and Bara Waters of Goose.

The album’s first music video, "10,000 Flowers," is a virtual dreamscape of psychedelic deserts, flower fields and performance footage. Shot on film by award-winning director Chen Rohwer, this video has received advance critical raves from as far away as India.

One summer night a few years ago, a woman in Grand Rapids, Michigan, heard a soft thump-thump-thump coming from upstairs where her baby was asleep. She ran up to find her son rocking against the rails of his crib in perfect rhythm. That headbanging little boy was Robert Cassard.

At age 1-1/2, Cassard was spinning discs on the family hi-fi. At 4 he knew the labels of every 45 in his brothers’ collection. At 8, he bought his first guitar. “I bought it with Green Stamps,” Cassard remembers. “Inside was stamped REJECT in big letters. The strings were an inch above the neck. It was impossible to play, but I loved that guitar.”

All through school, Cassard rocked his way through cover bands, and solo acoustic gigs. At 18, he built his own studio and released the acoustic underground hit Over The Line. It sold an impressive number of copies and helped (in its own small way) to fuel the resurgence of college radio.

After college, he wrote and produced corporate advertising, commercial music and jingles for a few years to pay the bills. He also got married to the wrong person and Cassard’s own music was relegated to the garage. Cassard eventually got divorced and said goodbye to suits and ties. During that time, he met Bara Waters (now of the alternative band Goose), who brought him back to the music he loved and became his new songwriting partner. These experiences are chronicled on Get This.

Since Cassard’s move to California, he’s produced diverse artists including the world music act Love Tribe, rock trio Baba Cool, Irish retro-soul diva Angela McCright, acid lounge act Uluteka and the power pop artist Roux. In 1998, he shot and directed a music video for Roux which landed squarely on VH1. He’s been directing music videos ever since, along with documentary videos for causes he believes in. His film and video production company, Edge Films, can be found on the web at https://www.tradebit.com.

the reviews:

We are lit up by the glowing reviews and endorsements Cassard has garnered. Below are additional reviews by underground and local press with excellent taste and the courage to write about something before it''s been discovered:

“...Get This stirs up the retro psychedelia of Eight-Miles-High-era Byrds and Break-On-Through Doors, with the drive of She’s-the-One Springsteen, the ethereal harmonies of Deja-Vu CSN&Y with the earthiness of Break-the-Chain Fleetwood Mac...”
-Underground Network

“Lyrics to make Crosby, Stills & Nash green with envy. Vocals to make Kenny Loggins wonder if he has a hip son he doesn''t know about...”
-Dan Augustine, Hoofspin

“Cassard rocked the Gypsy Den with the delicate sound of thunder. I sat there watching one guy with an acoustic guitar, but what I heard was so full, rich and powerful, it seemed like an illusion.. In every note I heard echoes of the past and saw visions of the future. Cassard''s originals reveal something I can never get enough of - the truth.”
-ULC News

“Cassard is a modern Moses. Producing Get This on 8-tracks is a feat akin to parting the Red Sea.”
-William Hebert/Light2
