The Band’s Story
The Christopher Jordan Band now usually referred to as the CJB was actually accidentally or perhaps more appropriately unexpectedly formed. Chris began writing worship songs after he began leading worship in May 2003 in a response to youth not being engaged in worship. Chris took from his own background and combined it with the idea of corporately worshipping God to create high energy, passionate worship songs. With no intention to ever really do anything with it other than share them with worshippers in his community, Chris recorded a solo project, Living Sacrifice, at the recommendation of friends.
After traveling for a bit outside of his home church, an opportunity arose to have a worship concert in the unknown town of Plano, IL. Chris then contacted Kyle and had already been working with Roy at the church. Zack was added to the mix a few weeks later and the Christopher Jordan Band played their one time only concert on November 19, 2004. This was ironically Kyle’s birthday for the record. The response was huge, and the band was booked in December for other events. They then recorded the More of You project and released in March 2005. The band did not know what to expect as shows kept piling up and the tour saw them span Kansas City to New York playing shows such as Cornerstone Festival and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
This unexpected start developed into a forceful ministry that started moving in big ways. Their new, edgy brand of worship music has been catching on every since and songs such as More of You, Bigger Than, FBK, Living Sacrifice, and Burning Desire have been used in corporate worship gatherings beyond what the band has done. More importantly though, the band realized their role as evangelists in April 2005 and has since witnessed a few dozen people coming to know Christ at concerts and related events. The idea of using cutting edge worship to reach up to God while the music still and testimony of the band and its members reaches out to people has been life changing on all accounts.
The band returned from the tour in September and stayed busy playing in the Midwest. In late October the CJB opened for Pillar with new drummer John Thompson. The change was difficult and unforeseen, but the guys have remained close and the mission is stronger than ever. CJB wrapped up 2005 and kicked off 2006 with a flurry of concerts. They stay busy playing all over the country and desire to see youth set on fire for Christ. The band set to recording a new EP, Finding Beautiful, in February and March of 2006. This adds to the list of their unforeseen events and doings as they try to seek God first and let everything else fall into place as He sees fit.
Playing 75 shows in 2005 and projecting over 120 shows in 2006, the Christopher Jordan Band is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with both in the spiritual realm as well as the Christian music scene. Expect to hear about this band everywhere you go as we’ll be seeing some big things from them in the future!
Chris’ Story
I have not had the life that most people assume those in Christian leadership positions have had. My family, while somewhat haphazard churchgoers in my younger years, was not what I would call a Christian home. In that sense, I grew up very much apart from God. I was aware of some greater beings existence when I was growing up, but that was about the end of it. For the record, I have always questioned just about everything. So as I got older, I started questioning the why’s and what’s of the things my “parent’s church” did. I received no real answer so I left not caring and with no real belief. For most of you, this matters not. However, now begins where I hope many of you become interested. I played hockey during this entire period. I loved it. It was my everything, my all in all, my dreams, my life. I was suppose to go the University of Michigan eventually and play for the Wolverines, but instead, I suffered a career ending injury in my early high school years (frosh/soph). My life and all I had ever hoped for was stripped away from me. As far as I was concerned, I had nothing. I quickly became very depressed and turned to the only other thing I knew, heavy metal. I started playing guitar as an outlet for my depression but that wasn’t enough. I needed more. So I started to cling to drugs, alcohol, and sexual things. That ended up never being enough either. Going into my senior year, I declared myself as an atheist (an individual that believes in no God) and was rather adamant about it often abusing Christians I knew verbally. After abusing vicodin for approximately a month, I hit bottom on January 27, 2003, and tried to commit suicide by hanging myself. I tied an extension chord around my neck after taking a few vicodin, climbed up on a chair, wrapped the other around my arm, and proceed to try and choke myself to death. I blacked out twice pretty quick but before I blacked out again, that’s when Christ found me. Notice, Christ found me. I did not find Christ as I did not believe He existed. In my darkest moment, God spoke to me in a voice I can only describe as the sound of grace and said “You can not do this. I love you too much. You have a job to do and I AM not through with you yet.” I let go of the extension chord, fell on the ground, and started crying saying “I’m sorry” over and over. It was there that I accepted Christ. It was there that I vowed to live for Him. It was there that His divinity and His grace came and scooped up my mess, touched my heart, and made me clean, forgave my sins, and reconciled me with God.
That is why I am the way I am. That is why we play the way we do. To worship God is not a mere song we sing. It is a lifestyle that is our hearts response to that grace that reaches into the very core of our being in every moment of every day and screams I LOVE YOU! How amazing, that the creator of all that exists desires to be our friend, to know us intimately, to save us from the hell we deserve and gives us an indescribable gift of eternal life…..salvation….fellowship with Him, for NOW and FOREVERMORE.
This grace is very every person that has every lived and for every person that will ever lived. No matter what you’ve done, where you’re from, what color you are, how you speak, what you look like, what group you run with, how much you sin, how “holy” you are, or all the millions of mistakes you’re about to make. Goth skater to squeaky clean preacher man. Millionaire stud to the poorest of poor. The good to the bad. There is no difference. There is no segregation. There are God’s children. There are those that have been bought by the blood of Jesus Christ. End of story. Now….you either can accept that…..or you don’t. I pray that you do. I pray that if you are reading this right now and you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, that you accept Him. If you want to know more or want to accept Christ and don’t know how, all you have to do is believe in your heart and declare with your lips that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of your life. 15He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own.
16Because of this decision we don''t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don''t look at him that way anymore. 17Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! 18All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. 19God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. 20We''re Christ''s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God''s work of making things right between them. We''re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he''s already a friend with you.
21How? you say. In Christ. God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God.
Romans 5:1-8, 20-21 (The Message)
1By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us--set us right with him, make us fit for him--we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. 2And that''s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand--out in the wide open spaces of God''s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.
3There''s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we''re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, 4and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. 5In alert expectancy such as this, we''re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary--we can''t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!
6Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn''t, and doesn''t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn''t been so weak, we wouldn''t have known what to do anyway. 7We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. 8But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.
20All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn''t, and doesn''t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it''s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. 21All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that''s the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life--a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.
