Ma Bessie''s Clean Comedy and Music CD Project is the result of being called grandma for the past 34 years by my high school mates. Earl and Sheila were my (pretend) grand children from the 7th through to 12th grade at FAMU High. They still call me grandma now (2006). Hey Babies! I''ve been singing and joking for the past 34 years but things just got funny at age 40.
My parents were very old when I popped up. So I have an old soul in a young body. I look and sound like my mother and grand mother, whose names were both Cherrye also. My great grandmothers name was Cherrye, My grandmothers name was Cherrye, my mothers name was Cherrye, My name is Cherrye, and my daughter''s name is Cherrye (her twin sister''s name is Cherraye) thanks to Eufrederick C. Turner (Juanita''s son). It''s alright, it''s all legal.
My dad was an over the road truck driver for 50 years. He had millions of funny stories to tell. My mom was a starch ironned born again and again and again Christian.
She was a professional dress-maker with her shop in our house. My mother could not sing a note but she was in the church choir all of her life. She taught me all the hymns in our 500 page hymnal when I was about 8 years old. She paid for some piano lessons from Rev. Bernice Clausell and got her friends Mable Sherman my high school music teacher) and Mildred Bellamy Mitchell (our church organist) to work with my voice. They were older people just like my mom. I grew up playing and singing in the church choir with the older people,choir #1.
Now, I am the Minister of Music at my church, Arnett Chapel AME Church in Quincy, FL Reverend Willie Hagan Pastor, Sister Everlyn Hagan first lady. I went to college on the Full Paid Music Scholarship at Bethune Cookman College. I was the leader sing in this World Renouned Concert Chorale as directed by Dr. Rebecca Steele and Mr. DerricK James. I have traveled from the Bahamas to Canada, New York to Texas and all in Between. Yes I was the musical show stopper and the guaranteed funniest character of all. I soon became the number 1 commentator/host for events from High Powered Politicians to University Retirements, Church Parties, and Hair Shows from Daytona Beach to Atlanta, from New York to Miami.
I returned home after graduation to care for my aging and very ill parents. As I said they were pretty darn old when I was born. Little did I know that this would be the making of the career that would take care me for the rest of my life. Though my parents are not with me in body, they are in me in spirit and jokes.
My mother could not sing a note but was in the church choir all her life. She thought she could sing but oh my gosh, she could not. My dad could sing but he liked Kenny Rogers and Wolf Man Jack. So I''m a little bit country, a little bit Christian and a whole lot of funny.
Life really got funny when I lost my mind and got married for the first time at age 37. My husband, Sgt. James R. Branch US Army, wanted a girl baby. At nearly age 40 I gave birth to two more boys trying to have a girl. I then totally lost it and became the funniest woman (women) in the world. People began paying me to come to their events to be ME (funny). I hosted several Radio Shows, was on the Gordon Elliot Talk Show, which by the way the rating for Gordon Elliot sky rocketed the week I was on, and the show was re-broadcast later as one of the most memoriable shows ever.
I have recorded 4 Music CD''s, 4 Comedy CD''s, and 4 DVD''s. I have recorded with several groups, choirs, and individuals. I sang and recorded with an R & B Band named "Work For Higher" for 8 years. Hey Gang!
Finally, I decided to totally fly the coop, quit my job of 17 years at the University (early retired) and get my former career back on track. I put a studio in my house and began recording. My son, Calvin, who is 14 now, is my therapist, camera-man, photogragher, scriptwriter, and baby-sitter. Together we have created a wealth of funny.
I have a 50 year old husband who thinks he is 20. We have children that are the same age as our grandchildren. We have a 21 year old street wise son who thinks he is God''s Gift to all women. Twin daughter''s who are as much alike as President Bush and Ben Laden. We have a 14 year old who writes more plays and movies them Stephen Spielberg and Steven King together (by the way he''d like to meet them). And a 5 and a 6 year who just started school (pre-K and Kindergarten) last year. I have my husbands ex-wife, who is almost like a sister to me. Both sets of grandparents are dead and our brothers and sisters are scared, sick or in Jail. Our house blew away in a storm in 2000. We were houseless for 6 months (all 7 of us). And then life got really funny...
