From a nether corner of the ambient world comes Sponge, a largely improvised and very eclectic take on the subject. The duet has conjured up a visceral sea of sound and imagination which is sometimes calming, sometimes disturbing, sometimes both at the same time. Don''t mistake Sponge for another hypnotic, into-the-void wallpaper music CD. Sponge is too emphatic and embodies a greater musical presence than most ambient releases, largely owing to van der Schyff''s deep background in improvised and new musics and to Tarry''s multifaceted experience across the musical spectrum. 24 minutes of live improvised electronics.

DYLAN VAN DER SCHYFF
One of the leading figures on the Vancouver new music/improv scene. Van der Schyff has lent his talents to countless other performance situations, playing with such luminaries as George Lewis, Louis Sclavis, Eyvind Kang, Georg Grawe, Myra Melford, Michael Moore, John Butcher, Mark Helias, Evan Parker, Vinny Golia and Andy Laster. He performs and records with Talking Pictures and works with Tony Wilson''s group. As well, he has played with François Houle''s trio. (The very same trio that played a tremendous double bill with Talking Pictures at the 1997 Victoriaville Festival). Van der Schyff is also a member of the NOW Orchestra and has worked with NOW in large-scale projects with Barry Guy, Rene Lussier and Butch Morris. Two excellent recordings have been released documenting the Guy and Lussier encounters. Another excellent recording is François Houle''s John Carter Project, where van der Schyff performs alongside Houle, Peggy Lee, Mark Dresser and Dave Douglas.

CHRIS TARRY
This bassist, composer and producer has spread his prodigious talents across the musical spectrum. He is a graduate student of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, a two time Juno Award winner, a nominee for bassist of the year (1997) by Canadian Music Magazine, and a nominee for best new artist at the Montreal Jazz Festival (Du Maurier Grand Jazz Award: 1995). He has reached considerable commercial success with his jazz group, Metalwood, winning Juno Awards for best contemporary jazz group two years straight. For SPONGE, Tarry has drawn upon his extensive experience and taste for the eclectic and ventured into the outer regions of improvisation, ambience and sampled source materials.
