Blueprints… where did it all begin?

"Where do I start? I’ve been playing guitar for the past six years now. I have my dear friend Robert Galea to blame for that. His inspiring song-writing moved me to write my songs too. A couple of years later a few friends and I were motivated to start a band together. Taking the name Reckless Abandon, we played gigs at various events in places such as our University and Baystreet. In January 2004 I had my first go at recording, which took place in my own bedroom. With my mattress as sound-proofing, I recorded a single in Italian. I offered it as a gift at two conferences held in Sicily, each with over 300 participants. The people there supported the album to the point where I was able to start the recording of Blueprints. Not only that, but the single was then used in a conference in Rimini that had 80,000 participants. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was in the studio recording my first album."

Have you had many experiences abroad?

"Yes, and each one was fantastic. I am always glad to see people enjoy the music. I have travelled to Italy several times as well as the UK and Australia. My favourite part of all this travelling is the people I meet. After some of the sessions I sometimes have a chance to talk to some of the people and exchange a few words. I always learn something new about the music this way – maybe what moved them in particular, or what they’re looking for in a song."

In fact the lyrics of your songs are quite emotional. What inspires them?

"All I’m doing is trying to be sincere. I want to deliver a positive message to people and bring a smile to their faces. What inspires them? I believe a lot has to do with my spiritual life. Having faced some harsh realities in life, I did some real soul-searching. Through the years, I’ve had hardships and I’ve had moments of joy, and I’ve realised that God is with me in every moment."

“Blueprints” is quite an odd name for a song. What is the significance of the title?

"The title was born out of my greatest fear – which is my own future. So many questions would go through my mind, “What course should I choose at University? Will I ever get married?” I’m sure many people can identify with that. Well, a blueprint is a specific plan – for example, like that of a house. The architect already knows what the house will be like before it is built. In the same way, I believe that God has a great plan for our lives, and our challenge is to trust in that plan."

Your songs have been heard on Malta’s most popular radio stations as well as on television – how does that make you feel?

"It makes me feel good but quite afraid at the same time. I didn’t plan to have my songs on the radio, but Charles Busuttil from Band Aid Music (who not only takes excellent care of my guitar, but is also a great friend!) saw the potential and helped push the songs. Now, every day I have different people telling me that they’ve heard the song! I’m glad to know that people are enjoying the song Blueprints. The greatest satisfaction was when my producer Boris Cezek and I heard the finished song for the first time. It was the first track recorded of the whole album, and up to today today remains our favourite."

So how many songs have you written on this album?

"There are 10 songs on the album Blueprints. Some are a few years old now, while others were finished in the studio. Although my name is written next to each song, credit must go to Boris, because it was with his help that some of the songs were able to reach their full potential. The style kind of varies throughout the whole album, some are faster, some slower. I was really glad to have people naming a different song as their favorite one. This was only possible thanks to some of the Island’s best musicians. Eric Wadge, Boris Cezek himself, Kris Spiteri and Philip Zammit all contributed their own styles, giving each song its very own character. Although previously I mentioned Blueprints as my favourite song, Caught up in love is the most special song to me. It was a song written for my grandma Georgia who passed away in September 2004, to whom the album is dedicated. She always believed in me, and I know she is looking down on me now."

What are your aspirations, your dreams? Are there any plans for future music?

"I can’t deny that I miss the studio. I’m still writing songs today, and if everything continues going with the rhythm it’s going, I’m sure you will be hearing some new songs in the future. It would be cool if my music takes off, but it’s not what’s really important. My songs have a story to tell, and my hope is to bring a smile to the weary, and to stir people’s thoughts about the significance of their life and the presence of God."
