Introducing…
Jomel Sumira
…Hawaii’s Latest Singing
and Songwriting Sensation

Who’s that girl that’s got it all together? Step aside idols, meet the new girl on the block, who is taking the stage and impressing audiences around town, not only for her vocal talent, but her overall accomplishments and ambitious future!!!

Known for opening many UH Men’s and Women’s Volleyball and Basketball games singing the national anthem and state song flawlessly, Jomel would like to entertain the sports crowds at the University of Texas at Austin. “Do you think they would let me sing at their volleyball or basketball games,” she asks, “… that would be cool…” However, making people smile and enjoy themselves is only part of the larger picture for this talented 19 year old. Although she could make music a career for herself, she has larger goals in life.

Having graduated from Moanalua High this past year with a 3.8GPA, Jomel left for the University of Texas at Austin this fall to pursue a pre-medicine degree and eventually plans on returning home to Hawaii to complete her residency. Her long range goal is to serve her community as a pediatrician, who will sing for her patients, because she wants to relieve the rigors of everyday life.

Jomel has been recognized with numerous awards and honors for the difference she made to her school and community including the Presidential Freedom, Principal’s Leadership Award, Overall Female for Sassy and G Magazine’s Most Outstanding Seniors of 2005, Citizenship Award, Moanalua High’s Student of the Year and Most Outstanding in the Music Department 2005, and Soroptimist, Rotary, and Hawaii Self-Storage Scholarships.

“Becoming an officer, student body president, district representative or club member wasn’t something I had to do, rather something I wanted to do. I wouldn’t trade any of the years I served in office because it gave me the opportunity to help other people, and for personal growth, as I’ve learned to have more patience, endurance, and foresight. Leadership has indeed taught me selflessness, and that service comes from the heart.” She is aware of the role and sacrifice her parents have played in her desire to want to be involved and is very
appreciative of all they did to bring her to this point in her life, where she displays
professionalism, maturity, and warmth while entertaining on stage or meeting her fans.

Sumira is no stranger to the stage, as she performed for years with the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios, and became a lead singer with the group, “Joy”. She performed for the Moanalua High student body numerous times, won in Kiddieoke and Road to Fame competitions, performed as a first violinist with Moanalua’s Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of their Concert and Jazz Choirs. The highlight of being with the Symphony Orchestra was being able to perform and sing solo at Carnegie Hall this past spring. She also entered Hawaii’s Junior Miss Pageant, improved her confidence on stage, and impressed the judges by holding her note for twelve seconds to take the Overall Talent Award for her vocal performance.

Her biology teacher recalls,” I remember the first time I saw her perform as a freshman for the Road to Fame Competition. I knew that if she was that good then, just think what a great future she would have.” Little did he know that he would be helping Jomel produce, fund, and manage her first CD. Credit also should be given to the other members of Brentwood (Alvin Moratin, John Wong, Jack Martin, Gail Higa, and Mike Miyashiro), who helped her with the accompanying music. Her teacher, being lead singer for Brentwood before the group retired, sang the duet that Jomel wrote (“If Only”) with her, played the guitar (“Right Here Waiting”), and provided background vocals.
“…(Jomel) demonstrates her ability to bring sensitivity and emotion to song—some from her pen, others adapted to her sweet and straightforward style……Sumira has an appealing voice, the right pitch, the vocal smarts to put her imprint on a cover song (“On My Own,” “Game of Love,” “Right Here Waiting,”), while she gives originals a vibrant allure (“One Magic Moment,”, “It’s True”).”
- Wayne Harada, Honolulu Advertiser, 7/24/05

Currently, she is working on entertaining crowds around Oahu with her unbelievable voice. Make sure you catch one of her performances or signings before she leaves again for college in Mid-January; you’ll then have to wait until the summer. You can check her website, https://www.tradebit.com (which is still undergoing construction) to see the appearances schedule and hear clips of the music from her debut CD, “One Magic Moment”. Her CD can only be found at select locations including Border''s (Ward Centre), Harry''s Music, Hungry Ear in Kailua, Jelly''s in Aiea, Native Books Na Mea Hawaii (Ward Warehouse), Planet Fun (Kunia Shopping Center), Sam Goody (Ala Moana, Pearlridge, and Windward Mall), and Tower Records (Kahala Mall, Keeaumoku, and Pearl Kai).

Being able to meet new people and bring enjoyment to their lives is what has made this a rewarding experience for Jomel. As she says in her liner notes, “ life doesn’t revolve around necessities alone and we need something to relieve us from the rigors of life. Jomel reflects, “as a musician, you always hope deep inside that people like what you play for them, but when they tap their feet to the beat, that’s when I know my mission’s complete.”.
