After living through an almost fatal auto crash in 1980, Joe felt that voice of GOD then called him to return to the work he began in his youth. Within the next several years, Penny started to write songs, some of which are included in this album, and states,"While still on crutches, God directed me to sit down one night , late, in the wee hours, and with the paper before me and pen in hand, I really feel that GOD wrote those words", referring to GROWIN'' OLD WITHOUT GOD, since so many have been led to change their lives, after hearing the message this song/story contains. Joe began to give his testimony any where he could get people to listen , and during the first year of recovery, he teamed up with Pat Patton, an old friend he found that had given up his worldly
ways, also. Together they started doing jail ministry,and soon were led to form "HIS Prison Ministry", and began to travel all over, soon becoming Florida''s leading prison ministry and were on the regular schedule of 28 prisons,with some 40 members in the team. Joe had ,early on , had been appointed recruiter for the music group and soon had an
enthusiastic 10 to 12 players, and, annually, saw upwards of 600 inmates find changed lives. So, it is with heartfelt,fond memories that Joe Penny recalls closing each of those services,for 12 years, with his story/song,"GROWIN'' OLD WITHOUT GOD" and seeing inmates with tear-stained faces come forward to find a better life.
