The thing you notice most at one of Joshua Moyer’s live shows is just how much this guy loves playing. It’s about more than just about making music for this Philadelphia-based eclectic rock singer, guitarist and composer: it’s about having a conversation with his audience. Playing live gives this guy energy and his fans pick up on that. The crowd is affected, which drives Moyer to dig in harder, take risks and explore new ground. It’s no wonder that Joshua Moyer is building a growing following throughout the Northeast, delivering to audiences who are looking for something more in modern rock.
Growing up in Reading, PA Moyer got into music at an early age. His parents had an incredibly wide ranging record collection, and he remembers hearing everything from Kiss, Iron Butterfly, and Jefferson Airplane to The Beatles, Rod Stewart, and John Denver as a child. Joshua began singing in school with a variety of groups: classical ensembles, chamber choirs, and a gospel choir. He was a standout throughout high school and college, even performing at Carnegie Hall and touring Italy as a student at Lebanon Valley College. He also excelled in musical theater and performed in a wide variety of shows throughout Pennsylvania, appearing as an extra in the CBS TV show, Hack. He completed a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh.
Despite his success in musical theater and acting, something inside him always seemed to pull him back to creating his own music. Soon, Moyer moved from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia so that he could devote more time to the craft. The move quickly paid off – his original tracks appeared in the movie American Hoodlums, were selected by Jeep for their New York Auto Show showcase, and he has performed well-received shows in clubs throughout PA and NJ, including spots at World Café Live and Grape Street Pub.
It’s not surprising that Moyer has been influenced by honest “musicians’ musicians”. Joshua cites the loose, improvisational jams of the Dave Matthews Band, the rhythmic spiritual force of Bob Marley, and Trent Reznor’s expert polyphony and raw emotion as primary influences. Realizing that above all else these musicians
have always stayed true to the music and their own hearts, Moyer forges these seemingly disparate influences to create a sound uniquely his own. His compositions, whether upbeat or melancholy, embrace the fire of introspection and brutally honest lyrics. When he sings “Just beneath the skin, there’s a fear rising within, I see you with my eyes and I know just where to begin. I’m so full of hate that I can’t come out ahead; Seep into my dreams so you can pull me through the end” in “The Meek,” you can almost feel your skin crawl.
Moyer’s first full-length rock CD, Left-Handed Compliment has just been released. He is currently playing around the Philadelphia area with his band Joshua Moyer and the Hedonist Academy. Wherever his busy touring schedule takes him, audiences are taking note. As Moyer says, “When a musician is playing with all his heart, and conveying his emotions, the audience is right there with him.” From what we’ve seen from this young man so far, the audiences will be right there with him for a long time to come.
