Beltane means "bright fire" in Gaelic. In the old agrarian communities of Northern Europe fires were lit on the eve of May to celebrate the advent of the growing season. Villagers "jumped the fire" to bring good luck. They danced and feasted in the newly-planted fields, rejoicing in the return of the Green Time.
At Beltane, the earth calls all life to awaken, to rise with the sap, to revive and bloom. Jaiya has created a collection of original songs that celebrate life''s gifts. Their music reminds us to connect with the deep and enduring cycles of growth and renewal that sustain us.
“There is something strangely stirring about this music, something hopeful and affirming. It''s music from the hills, from far away, and from home, all at the same time. However Jaiya does it - whether it''s the jazzy accordion, the pennywhistle, the harp or those beautiful voices - what results is a deep and unshakeable certainly that the clouds will part, the auld moon will rise again, everything is going to be alright, after all.” Terry Glavin, Transmontanus Press, BC
“Jaiya, quite an exquisite group from Mayne Island
- another good reason to go to folk festivals, to discover groups like them.”
