Details:
Justin Burkett is a singer & songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. From his earliest influences of those old Beatles Cartoons, he knew that music was for him. At around age 8, his Grampa Eddie, found an old guitar on top of a trash can one day, and took it home and fixed it up for him. Those early songs have been lost, but consisted mostly of references to a love of rock and roll, nightmares and not being afraid of the bear, with a chaotic out of tune clanging on that old steel string guitar. His earliest formal music training was in the school band on the trumpet. He was selected to be a member of the elite middle school, “jazz-band”. Here was his first taste of life as a touring musician. Fearing social consequences and the tearing of lips due to braces, he opted out of being in the high school marching band, and decided to take up the guitar. Using a classical guitar in his dad’s closet and some old books he began to teach himself to play. Now his songs actually had something musical about them. One fateful day, while awaiting callbacks for a production at the local Community college, he looked under a bush and saw a crisp 100 dollar bill. These were going to be the funds he would use to purchase a “real” guitar. However, his parents, sensing his interest, found him a very nice Carlos guitar and gave it to him that Christmas. Now he had some money for some proper guitar lessons. Pretty cool. At a certain point, he learned how to learn songs on his own, but was more interested in writing his own music. And his life has been a continual evolution as a songwriter and as a human. With all that he heard about the music industry, and listening to the advice of his father, he realized that he would be well suited to have a “back-up plan”, a plan B. There was always an interest in becoming a physician, so he went to college to study biochemistry, seeing as how chemistry was his worst subject in high-school; it was only natural to learn as much about this subject as he could, plus it would make a fine pre-med degree. The idea was that with a great day job, he would be free to pursue music without the temptation to “sell out”. While in college at UCLA, he had a part time job at the University Library, he was exposed to a wide variety of ideas and writers in a most random way, and he started to see through the reductionist logic of western science. Well, western medicine was not for him. He realized that he did not want to push drugs, as powerful as they are, because he knew that the body has a natural capacity for healing, and became very interested in natural healing and Daoism and Buddhism. In his term there, he took two classes that forever changed his life, “How to make History and Change Society” and “Native American Singing”. The first laid the foundation of an idea for a healing center focused around gardening, instrument making, music recording, concerts etc… and from the other class, Ed Blackfoot, showed him how to use his voice. After a year of making and recording music, he discovered Chinese Medicine and studied to become an Acupuncturist. He started learning how to record music with a computer and began making music for real. Gone were the days of the dual tape deck and the shoddy overdubs. This collection, Destination Palmdale, represents a year of commuting from Lancaster to LA without a car: taking buses & trains, and riding his bike. He is now at sea as the resident acupuncturist aboard the Jewel of the Seas seeking adventure and no doubt working on music in his off time.
