I spent the whole summer of 2010 busking in a small cafe called The Frog Pond in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, playing for the tourists, for the locals, and for my friends. It was a remarkable experience and I wanted to capture how it felt on disk. This collection of about 55 minutes of music pretty much expresses the many moods of that summer. The original tunes (tracks 2, 5, 8, 12, 14, 15, and 18) were actually composed over a three year period and didn''t really see the light of day until I recorded them in August 2010.

I played a very strange harp over that summer--a Smart Harp from Musicmakers, which is a dirt cheap kit harp. In the middle of the summer, the flimsy body of that harp collapsed and I was left with a simple triangular wood frame strung with 29 strings and little else. I added an electric pickup to the string rib and, in a single moment, I had turned a rather feeble kit harp into a mighty electric harp built to withstand the rigors of daily busking. When it came time to record the music for this CD, I opted for my more mellow sounding Camac Aziliz harp.

The whole shebang was recorded in less than a week in my living room in Delaware using two AKG C1000 microphones running into an Alesis digital mixer and then straight into a computer running Sound Forge software. There is no overdubbing or splicing of any tracks but, as you might expect, there were enough re-takes of the tunes to keep me on my toes for that week.

Brian Boru’s March – An ancient Irish march, dedicated their last Irish high king.
Planxty Fleetwood – Echoes of Fleetwood Mac, the first of several scraps of my own music on this CD
Captain O’Kane – The first of several Carolan tunes here.
Marble Halls – Based on a mixture of Enya’s and William Coulter’s versions, a song from a 19th C. opera.
Hannah’s Wedding March – For Hannah and Rick.
Come To The Hills – Fetching Scottish melody.
Carrickfergus – My favorite Irish ballad of longing for home.
Nod To Carolan – My tune, a product of my addiction to the music of Carolan.
Carolan’s Welcome – A lively bit from Carolan that has hints of Italian influence.
Si Bheag Si Mhor – A traditional Scottish melody that Carolan borrowed for a tale of the battle between good and bad faeries in https://www.tradebit.comcommon.
Lady Athenry / Planxty Irwin / Planxty Sweeney / Fanny Power – Also known as the Planxty Cheese Royale, lots of Carolan’s meatier tunes served on a sesame seed bun.
Cold Front – The storms from Labrador drive waves that can move mountains in Cape Breton.
Toy / Princess Royal – The first bit is from Sir Francis Cutting and the second is yet another Carolan tune.
Furtive Mountains – Pity the tourists to Cape Breton who happen to role through during a fog. The mountains can be whimsical.
Frog Pond – For everyone who makes the Frog Pond possible, including the frogs.
MaCallistrum’s March – From Janet Harbison’s arrangement but with my own variations.
Variations on Foggy Dew – This melody has seen many uses from a lover’s tune to a lament to a call to arms.
Shale Tells A Tale – Time is embedded in shale rocks. Each slice is a year in the life of the planet. Really amazing to notice that.
Men Of Ulster – A traditional lullaby based on Alisdair Frazier’s arrangement on his CD "Return to Kintail."
