There were few maps in the old west or at best crudely drawn ones. Land markers were often used, like a particular croppin’ of rocks or a distinctive lay of the land, certain mountain ranges, and even a lake or a stream. Of course the heavens by day or night were
a very important guide map as well. Many a sea and land sailor were guided by the night constellations.
There were certain books that were also considered maps for man kind as well in the old west. However, in the cowboys life there wasn’t much room for frills. If he carried any such things at all they would have to be a highly selected prize. One of the books probably more than any other he might have in his possession, if he could read, would have been a Bible. We know, for instance, that all the Pony Express riders were given a Saddlebag Bible.
The Bible has been looked upon and regarded as a road map for the soul and a guide for life in a relationship with God.
We have purposely selected songs that we feel cowboys would probably have sung around campfires and at cowboy camp meetings that would certainly reflect that relationship with their Maker and His Holy Word. There are a few newer tunes such as Mansion Over The Hilltop and Just A Closer Walk that I’m sure have had there place around the campfire as well. We also added some distinctly cowboy songs that have been handed down to us from that past such as “Strawberry Roan And Little Joe” and “Rounded Up In Glory” and a newer song from Red Steagal called “Lantern On The Wagon”. The first track, “Cowboy Anthem”, is a Mountain Saddle Band original as well as the album title song, “Saddlebag Bible”.
