After finishing "Long Day''s Journey" in 2001, Stan immediately wrote two new songs, the powerful rock song "Something More" and the anthemic "The Reaching." He knew they would have been great additions to "...Journey", but it was too late for that record. So over the next few months, Stan compiled the best unreleased songs of his "Woodbys" years to package with the two new songs. The result is the strongest collection of songs Stan has ever released.
Some of the songs show a tender side, led by Stan''s fingerstyle guitar work. "Roll Away" tells the story of a woman walking away from her husband''s fresh grave, gathering strength to forge on. "Only the Moon Knows", the album''s most hauntingly beautiful track (and a song that Stan calls the best he''s ever written), wistfully captures the ache of lost love. Other songs have a philosophical bent, such as "Waltzing", led by Joe Lamanno''s lyrics about "Waltzing on the deck of the Titanic." "Jekyll to Hide", another Lamanno-penned lyric, speaks to the pain of overcoming addiction.
And at the core are the two new songs, which form the bookends for the CD. "Something More", featuring Jim Bybee''s searing electric guitar work, says we "are all looking for something more", with an urgency and power that is rare from a primarily acoustic musician. "The Reaching" looks out at the horizon, with an anthemic chorus that sings that "the reaching is the hardest part." It is an electrifying moment on an electrifying album of songs from a truly gifted songwriter, singer and guitarist.
