The Songs:
Complicated Shoes
The "phony drawl" applied to the vocal was absolutely necessary. John Hiatt or Steve Earle weren''t available.
Smoke & Mirrors
An attempt to write in the style of Neil Young, particularly songs like Powderfinger. I love how Neil will write what looks like an obvious storyline, but leave holes in the plot along the way. You''re never quite sure what happens to the protagonist in the end. The protagonist in Smoke & Mirrors is manipulated into participating in a crime, but is not savvy enough to see the extended "dalliance" as a manipulation until much later.
Sand Fever
A song about inertia.
Black Top, White Lines
Inspired by the Nick Tosches profile "George Jones: The Grand Tour". Essential reading. (…the Tosches story that is, not the lyrics…)
Not To Be Taken Internally
The music reminded me of Graham Parker, so i thought I''d try to write a lyric like him. I was also listening to quite a bit of pre-beard Waylon Jennings at the time--a guy known for singing his share of "woman, you just don''t understand me!" type songs (see "Mental Revenge" or "Woman, Don''t You Ever Laugh At Me". Ridiculous!) Anyway, it''s a song about an angry, embittered paranoid. The lyric has nothing at all to do with me personally.
