Rob Schuh...a gifted musician, recording artist and entrepreneur, began his musical adventure at age seven and by age eleven, when his prodigious talent was recognized, was invited to play in his high school jazz band. His talent and dedicated study of music and the arts were again recognized as a drummer for the prestigious Florida All-State jazz band in his Junior and Senior years. Schuh''s musical beginnings are attributed to his father, also a drummer, who encouraged his talents and ambitions.
After high school, Schuh was awarded a scholarship to study jazz. First at the University of Miami school of music and later at Arizona State. He was fortunate to study and train with Steve Bagby, Ed Thigpen and Shelly Manne-three of the most highly respected names modern jazz. He began playing with Jaco Pastorius when he was just 19 years old. His main influences include the great Elvin Jones, Tony williams and Jack Dejohnette, whose persuasion can be heard in his approach to the instrument today. He has performed with some of the most prominent and influential artist of a generation, including Bob Ravenscroft, John Medeski, Jaco Pastorious, Ernie Watts, Charlie Rouse, Joe Henderson, Marcus Roberts, Mike Wofford, Tony Malaby, Steve Bailey, among others.
By the early 90''s Schuh had also become an avid nutritionist and body builder, placing 7th in the 1991 NPC National Body Building Championships, and also had several articles published in bodybuilding magazines. Schuh''s competitive career was shortened in 1991 when he was diagnosed with kidney failure and spent the next eight years in recovery before returning to music. Now a 30-year veteran and still a student of the art, he continues to perform and record.
Rob Schuh currently resides in Arizona. When he is not performing or in the studio, he can be found at the offices of Hard Bop Drums, his custom drum-making business located in Phoenix, AZ.
