When I was studying classical trombone at the royal conservatory in the Hague, my theory teacher Mrs. Kien used to say: “you have to know your cliché’s”.
Growing up in the 60es, 70es & 80es my personal musical cliché’s turned out to be; Tv & film tunes, jazz, pop and classical music.
If you listen to these compositions you will be able to pick out melodic quotes, harmonic progressions or a bass-line that has its roots in the before mentioned musical fields.

Recording these songs has been an adventure. Just like on the first cd (Not the 7 Samurai) we recorded the whole band “live” in one room. And just like in 2004 we recorded some 20 tunes in 2 ½ days, no more than two maximum three takes per song. Recording went fast, mixing the tunes took a lot longer.
While working on this project, as the recording date’s neared, I started getting ideas for new songs. Captain Kirk was a tune I finished shortly before we started. It was the last song we recorded, none of the musicians had seen the music before. We played it through once and recorded it once. It turned out to be one of my favourite pieces on the cd (Robbie Carree told me the groove is called “flat tire” a kind of Polka) I love it. But, as with children, I love all the tunes on this disc. I even like the once that are not on it. Maybe you’ll hear those on a later date.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy this music as much as we did making it.

Willem Kiewiet de Jonge
