Details:
This album was inspire from a deep love and respect for the vidiya - the study and knowledge - of Sikh Classical Raag Kirtan, as well as the receptivity and appreciation of this rich, devotional music style by people from many paths.
A group of us have been studying and playing this style of music quite intensely over the past several years. One of the songs in particular -- Dhan Dhan Raam Daas Gur -- really stuck me deeply when I first heard it. When in India in 2004, i asked my kirtan teacher, Bhai Kultar Singh, to teach it to us. His father, Bhai Avtar Singh, was pleasantly surprised we wanted to learn it because he said most musicians steer clear of it, it being particularly difficult.
When playing it, the tabla moves much faster than you''d think it should and the voice soars slowly over the rhythm. Plus -- you never start on the first beat of the 16 beats of the rhythm. It took us--the tabla player, Gurprakash Singh, and I -- quite a while to work it out so that we could start it properly and keep the rhythm synced throughout.
I also started singing this acapella for meditations in yoga courses. In fact, singing it at the Norcal Women''s Camp in January 2010 was the first inspiration that we could actually record it.
When I decided to do an album, I had several ideas in mind -- most of them more western style chant albums. This was the most challenging one I could take on. A couple of my friends -- Gurneet Singh and Hukum Singh -- inspired me to ''go classical''. I''m so grateful I went for it.
Gurprakash Singh did a great job with the tabla -- his first ''spin'' in the studio and he commanded it really well. David Anderson and Matthew Vaughn, both western classically trained musicians, figured out how to translate their skills to this style. That was actually pretty hilarious -- all of us trying to figure out how to notate this music into western notation. Jon Gagan, the studio engineer from The Electric Company in Santa Fe (and Ottmar Liebert''s bass player, by the way) really stuck with me to make it work. And Liv Singh from Invincible Music in Phoenix worked the final magic by mixing and mastering it so beautifully. Ravinder Singh helped me with my pronunciation -- I did my best but if anything isn''t quite right, that''s all on me, not Ravinder. He definitely helped to make it way better!
This really a beautiful album and very rich and deep. I''m very happy with it!
