This is a vocal album of seven original songs that I wrote during a time of great change in my life. Each song came from my heart and its the first time I allowed myself to feel the vulnerability of attempting vocals. I could not have accomplished this album without "a little help from my friends." I had the support and encouragement of my friend and vocal coach, Janet Planet and the beautiful harmonic song arrangements by Tom Theabo. My dream has finally become reality. John Gibson and Chris Backus added the bass and Audrey Hendrickson brought in the percussion. John Gibson also gave the final engineering touches that brought the songs to life.
The opening song, Biindegaw Manidoog is a spirit calling song in Ojibwe language. I call and welcome the spirits from the four cardinal directions: East (Eagle), South (Wolf), West (Buffalo) and North (Bear). In the second song, Trail, I revisit an earlier theme carried throughout my current albums - the Trail of Tears of my Native American Ancestors. As indigenous people, we were wronged and we carry the scars of the past, yet we are not victims. This is the theme of the third song, A Warrior''s Heart. Mohican Eyes and Simply Amazed are songs of my love dedicated to my wife, Cyndi. In the sixth song, I join Janet Planet in a duet called Shame to Grace. It tells of the feelings I experienced as I began to leave behind addiction and see myself through non-judgmental eyes. Through the talents of Tom Theabo, we musically moved this simple song into a strong gospel beat that I loved hearing during my 20 years in the Afro-American Church. Finally, it''s the time of letting go, Summer Rain, a song Chris, Tom and I recorded live in my living room. When a sacred pipe ceremony is complete, we "break the pipe," (the stem is separated from the bowl) and hold them both toward Father Sky in gratitude and completion.
