Matti’s Coastal Country Journey

For quite a number of years my family and a few of my friends said that I should play and sing Country music cause my voice would suit it. Why would I sing that crap? That stuff is boring – I’d be asleep before I would finish the song. Well so I thought. Read on my friends for my Coastal Country Journey.

About two years ago whilst performing my solo acoustic sets at Mt Ommaney Lodge Apartments (my first fortnightly gig) – every now and then I would have some of our international guests come up and say - “You’re so laid back. You sound and play just like Jimmy Buffet…” My response was “Really…? I apologise I can’t say that I have heard of him but thankyou” They kept saying how cool Jimmy Buffett was and how I should try performing his songs. Well after receiving this comparison a few times I decided to find out who “Jimmy Buffet” is. So I googled, youtubed him and soon became drawn to his showmanship and musical talents. I then headed for local stores and grabbed a copy of the DVD Scenes that We All Know By Heart. The songs – Margaritaville, Come Monday and Fins soon become part of my repertoire. Seeing that I lived on the coast, worked at Dreamworld (ride attendant and Flowrider Instructor). Jimmy Buffet’s style of cool coastal “laugh it off “music really clicked with me.

Around August 2008 I met and dated a gorgeous red haired cowgirl who told me “ You better start listening to Country Music if you gonna be hanging round me.” We got on real well except I did not like Country Music – except for John Williamson. My response was “Really….? Country Music….? You have got to be kidding…?” Well she was not kidding and soon opened up my ears to a side of Country Music that I didn’t know existed. There was nothing but Country Music playing in her Ford Falcon Ute. Songs like “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy” “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” from artists such as Garth Brookes, Big and Rich, Trace Adkins, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. High-energy Country songs, I thought yeah they sound all right. Then I was introduced to the sounds of The Sunny Cowgirls, The McClymonts, Jennifer Nettles(Sugarland). These girls are hot……..I mean lets not forget that they are also very musically talented. Fellas if you’re not into country check them out. “Dancing on The Darling” is still my favourite film clip.

Something else Tess introduced me to was Rodeos and while our relationship was short it was long enough to grow an appreciation for this new social scene (of Rodeos) and Country Music. This was a fresh new start for me and I managed to blend the coastal and country music sounds I had grown to love with my own experiences/relationships and create the songs you now hear on the Seven Days Of Sundays album. With of coarse the help of the guys from Big Note Productions.

My contract at my last venue ended around April 09 and I started looking for some backing tracks to liven up my solo performances. This is when I stumbled across the company Big Note Productions at Burleigh Heads here on the Gold Coast. Whilst visiting their studios to purchase some backing tracks they mentioned that the studio was available for artists to record albums too. We spoke about the few song ideas I had and they asked me to describe what sort of sound could I be interested in…? I replied with something coastal sounding with a hint of country and fun sounding like Jimmy Buffet. They laughed and said sure. To do this properly I knew I needed to take some time off from gigging to concentrate on writing and of coarse to get the loan from the bank. So I asked my father if I could work with him as a labourer for a while whilst I have a go at this project. As always my parents never let me down and with their love and support eight months later I walked out with my first CD Seven Days Of Sundays.

I am so appreciative of everyone that I have met along the way who I have partied with, worked with, shared great times with and laughed with. In the album booklet are pictures and messages for those I have wrote about in my songs. If I get my fifteen minutes of fame I want you all to be part of it too. Lets continue the good times together.

Big love from the Biskit
