THE HELLBLINKI SEXTET: Xmas from Hellblinki (Four Years of The Hellblinki Sextet and The 12 Bands of Christmas)

The Hellblinki Sextet, known for their dark cabaret stylings, have been involved in "The 12 Bands of Christmas" charity for the past four years, helping to raise over $100,000 for the children''s wing of the Medical College of Georgia. This ep chronicles Hellblinki''s contributions to the 12 bands CD over the past three years along with the group''s 2006 submission.
12 Bands began in 2002 with a concert organized by Coco Rubio of The Soul Bar and the "A Very Groovy Christmas" television special created locally in Augusta, Georgia by Comcast. The TV show was hosted by James Brown, and went on to win a national Addy award.
The following year brought the involvement of Joe Stevenson, Ruskin Yeargin, and Bordertown Music, who, in conjunction with Soul Bar productions produced the first 12 Bands of Christmas CD. Since 2003, many thousands of the CDs have been sold throughout the region and the associated concerts at The Imperial Theatre (A Restored Vaudeville Theatre in Downtown Augusta) have sold out! The first selection on this CD, "Nuttin'' for Christmas" (by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennet) was included both in the 2002 TV special "A Very Groovy Christmas" and the first 12 Bands CD in 2003.
In 2004 Hellblinki chose a Medley of songs from the now obscure "Emmet Otter''s Jugband Christmas" a 1977 Jim Henson special that could be seen throughout the 80s on HBO (or passed around on video tape, it''s availiable now on DVD, find it, buy it, it''s fantastic!). The Hellblinki version (this time recorded by their own label, Weirdhead Publications, due to the complexity of the material) was once again one of the highlights of the compilation and featured the phenomenal musicianship of longtime Hellblinki contributor Henry Wynn III and his father Henry Wynn Jr. along with Kamela Lise a Former member of Apaocalypse Theatre and touring Member of Pigface singing the Ma Otter parts. The stage performance of the song featured many great local musicians, including Keith Jenkins from the James Brown band, Noel Brown of The Cubists, and local bassist Travis Petra. (all the musicians backstage came out during the song to join the chorus!)
In 2005 Hellblinki contributed another tune from a Holiday special, this time the "Snow Miser/HeatMiser" song from the Rankin/Bass production "The Year without a Santa Claus". Hellblinki choose this time to split the vocal duties with female singer Valerie Miess as "Heat Miser" to create a version of the song that is "Hot" in quite a different way from the origional! The performance was once again one of the highpoints of the evening, featuring a full horn section, and the members of almost every band playing the show as the Miser''s chorus...
This year, 2006, Hellblinki was not selected to participate in the 12 Bands of Christmas show and CD. (which comes expected, as they are the only group that has been selected to participate more than two years running...) We''ve included Hellblinki''s 2006 submission, a home demo of "Buy me Stuff for Christmas", for your listening pleasure, we hope you enjoy it as much as we have here at Weirdhead Publications...
Thanks a bunch,
Enjoy!
