Evaristo and Orchestra
Evaristo is part of a new generation of Cuban composers of modern salsa and Afro-Latin jazz, as well as a powerful singer and dancer. This Cuban-Canadian combines salsa with traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and flamenco. The result is highly danceable songs with sophisticated arrangements, innovative rhythms and ear-catching melodies.
He formed his own band, Evaristo and Orchestra in 2000, and has been playing in clubs around Toronto ever since. Evaristo works with a variety of arrangers, including Juno award winner Hilario Duran, and new talent Julio Cesar Jimenez. Backed up by a 10-piece band, they play Evaristo''s original songs, as well as some Latin Jazz and traditional Cuban music.
The band performs regularly at Lula Lounge, as well as in shows around Toronto (see https://www.tradebit.com for details). In 2001, they performed at the College Street Festival at Revival club, and in June 2002, they were featured in the Downtown Jazz Festival at the Bamboo Club. In 2004, his song ''Luna del Barrio'' was selected by Opening Act, a national competition to choose 12 songs by unsigned artists to be featured on their Web site as well as a compilation CD.

Early Years
Evaristo Machado was born in Havana City, Cuba, in 1962. He graduated from Havana''s Ignacio Cervantes Music School, training to be an operatic lyric tenor. This included training in piano, acting, and musical composition and history. He also studied classical guitar for 8 years.
In the 1980s, Evaristo started playing guitar and singing publicly, both in street performances, and with various rock and pop bands around the Havana club scene. He has been composing music since he was a teenager. One of the bands Evaristo played with, Groupo Mezcla, a well-known pop-rock band that still plays in Havana, recorded some of his songs, which became popular on the national radio.
Evaristo''s professional career dates from 1987, when he played guitar in a performance with Jesus Morales ("Moralitos"), one of the most important vibraphone concert players in Cuba. In 1988, he started singing with the Cuban National Radio and Television Chorus, and worked with them for over a year.
Tropicana Showman
Then in November 1989, Evaristo auditioned for the Tropicana Nightclub in Havana, and joined the company as a singer and dancer. The Tropicana has a world famous cabaret style nightclub show, performing 6 nights a week. He stayed with the company for 6 years, performing regularly, eventually becoming one of the principal singers for the show. The company went on many international tours, performing in Spain, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland.
Working Abroad
Evaristo moved to Milan, Italy, in 1995, where he began his career as a Salsa singer. He performed regularly in nightclubs, and in festivals around the country, including Rome, Rimini, Turin and Genoa. He also performed on RAI Uno Television.
Evaristo came to Canada in 1997, where he met Grammy-nominee Jane Bunnett, and started performing with her Cuban jazz ensemble. He performed at the (then) Du Maurier Theatre with Memo Acevedo in 1998. Before forming his own band, he was a regular singer with the Pablo Terry Band (Sol de Cuba), Klave y Kongo and Son Ache.
