Originally formed as a contest band at the Mt. Airy Fiddlers'' Convention in 2004, the Forge Mountain Diggers quickly realized that they were onto something good. Since then, the Diggers have won or placed in contests at Mt. Airy, the Stecoah Valley Festival, the Appalachian Stringband Festival (Clifftop), and the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The Diggers released their first CD in June 2006, and have shared stages with the Grascals, Uncle Earl, and Mike Compton (of the Nashville Bluegrass Band.)
Made up of former Freight Hoppers fiddler David Bass (fiddle), original Hogwaller Ramblers'' guitar/bass player Thomas Bailey (guitar and vocals) and the Milkcrate Rustlers'' Allison Williams (banjo and vocals), they have set out on a mission to put the "HELL YEAH" back in Old Time music - in the classic tradition of the Hilltoppers, Earl Johnson''s Clodhoppers, the Skillet Lickers, and the Coon Creek Girls. With a background in the DIY punk scene, the Diggers put their personal firebrand on the music.
