Jazz Ă la mode is a group founded by Frankie and Rosemary Chavez. Originally from LA, Frankie & Rosemary are new arrivals to the music scene in Sedona, Arizona. This dynamic duo bring with them years of professional experience in the club, concert, studio and performance arenas.
Frankie is an accomplished drummer and percussionist who has performed and recorded with numerous artists including Lionel Hampton, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Gerald Wilson, Larry Carlton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Willie Bobo and Buddy Collete, to name a few.
Rosemary is a professional singer who has performed with numerous recording and performance artists throughout the country and some of her recordings include three featured solos on the movie soundtrack CD, ROAR, starring actresses Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith, as well as being the featured vocalist on the American Voices CD written by gold record, award-winning composer and arranger, Terence P. Minogue.
Rounding out the players on the CD Sweet Jazz Ă la mode are Steve Sandner on keys, Max Borjon on Saxaphone, and Bryan Sinclair on Bass.
Frankie and Rosemary were each gifted musically at a very young age. A native Californian, Frankie began playing the drums at two years old and was playing professionally by the age of 11. Considered a child prodigy at 11, he toured with Lionel Hampton as a featured soloist. He was also one of the child dancers in the movie West Side Story starring Natalie Wood. Frankie was instrumental in introducing Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters to the art of playing drums. While attending Downey High School, they were not only classmates and friends, but she was one of his drum students as well.
Rosemary, who hails from Minnesota, began singing at three years old. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Luther College where she toured with the internationally acclaimed Nordic Choir under the direction of the legendary Weston Noble performing in such notable settings as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. She was also a featured recording soloist in the college production of Handle’s Messiah before going on to perform and tour with several Midwestern musical show groups.
These versatile performers have worked in numerous upscale venues and their musical styles encompass jazz, standards, blues and popular music including R&B and Latin.
Rosemary and Frankie created the Sedona Cares Katrina Relief Benefit Concert last September performing jazz, blues and Dixieland music and raising $5,000 for the American Red Cross. Rosemary, who in the past was a featured talent at the March for the Animals in Washington D.C. and at animal benefits in Los Angeles and San Francisco, would like to perform with her husband and one of their groups to help raise money locally for our animal friends.
Rosemary and Frankie have performed with the Max Borjon Bay City Big Band at Bucky’s Casino in Prescott and Rosemary recently was the guest big band vocalist in concert with the Yavapai College Big Band at Prescott’s Yavapai College Auditorium.
This past February their group Platinum was showcased at the first annual Sedona Marathon. Platinum also performed at the Sedona Arts Festival on Sunday, October 8, 2006, which was a great success. They are looking forward to performing at the arts Festival again next year. This coming February, Frankie & Rosemary will be performing at the 2007 Sedona Film Festival.
As a soloist/composer, Rosemary has delighted audiences in concert with Sedona favorite, keyboardist Jim Buchanan. Last fall both Rosemary and Frankie joined the group Lyra and soloist Jim Buchanan in a fundraising concert at the Briar Patch Inn for the Verde Valley Sanctuary. They performed music from Bach, The Beatles, Jobim and two of their original compositions—Rosemary''s "Angels All Around Us" and Frankie''s "Step Dancin'' at the Briar Patch." Rosemary was also the featured talent for Good Morning Sedona during the holiday season, 2005.
Rosemary continues to captivate her audiences with her bold beautiful voice and is affectionately referred to as "Pipes" while Frankie continues to keep everyone in step with his uncanny ability to know what audiences are looking for when they come out to listen or dance to music. Just like Frankie’s friend and mentor, world renowned drummer, Buddy Rich used to say "Keep it going, kid. Just keep it going." And that’s what they are doing!
Sweet Jazz Ă la mode was released November 18th, 2006 and is now available for purcahse here at cdbaby and at their performances. Currently Frankie & Rosemary are planning an album of original music to be released on their next CD.
