Shuck off those winter coats and don your visors and beads -- The Sun Kings'' Rub Up In It is coming your way ... from the tropical paradise of Aliquippa. From the get-high call of "Water''s Glare" to the acoustic album closer, it''s all sun-drenched reggae-funk and beachcomber musings. Which makes it really strange to see them play Moondog''s at the Graffiti Rock Challenge, which they did this past frigid February. The local power trio has concocted such an un-Pittsburgh sound, it''s hard to decide whether it''s just plain incongruous or something fresh.
The most obvious comparison for the Sun Kings is Sublime, and the band''s crafted a nearly perfect Sublime replica in the disc''s title track, "Rub Up In It." Squeaky-clean reggae guitar drives the chicken-peck rhythm, as the drums double time on the choruses and lay back -- way back -- on the verses. Other momentary similarities are 311 and, I suppose, Police tracks such as "One World."
Throughout, Dan Bubien''s guitar work is impressive and tasty, his resonant vocals reminiscent of Sublime''s Brad Nowell and Dave Matthews. The rhythm section of Christian "Captain" Caputo (bass) and Tim McCollim (drums) provide just enough cracking rim shots and burbling bottom end to keep the songs (and the Zig-Zags) rolling. And the spacious brittle sound of the recording is perfect for this style.
The Sun Kings probably aren''t the most original thing you''ve ever heard, but it''s a polished, fully realized and fun sound. And to persist with such sunny jams in our blustery climes, there has to be a little something to it.

Here Come The Sun Kings
They put the reggae in the rock ’n’ roll and shook it all up.
That’s the recipe for The Sun Kings, those Beaver County groove meisters who tonight release their debut CD, “Rub Up In It.”
An accessible, cohesive and catchy disc, “Rub Up In It” offers 11 original songs. The trio, amid thoughtful ruminations on love and relationships, slips in a few intriguing phrases. Perhaps they’ll explain the meaning of “south side shoes” or “Cinnamon King” at tonight’s CD release party at the Hard Rock Café in Pittsburgh’s Station Square.
Showtime is 10p.m., with a $7 cover that includes the CD.
The Sun Kings – singer-guitarist Dan Bubien, drummer Tim McCollim and bassist Christian “Captain” Caputo will warm up for that gig by acoustically performing “The Apartment Song” at 9:10 this morning on WDVE-FM.

Here come The Sun Kings, but it''s not what you might expect. Rather than channeling the Beatles, this Aliquippa trio draws its inspiration from the light funk grooves of Sublime and 311 and the reggae of Bob Marley. The trio -- singer-guitarist Dan Bubien, bassist-singer Christian Caputo and drummer Tim McCollim, is releasing its debut CD, "Rub Up In It," with a CD Release Party Friday at 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe, Station Square. Think Sublime with blasts of roadhouse-blues guitar.
That''s what the Sun Kings bring to the party.
Perhaps you saw the Sun Kings play Fat Tuesday at the Hard Rock Cafe or on St. Patrick''s Day at Jugheads in the Strip.
"We had people crowd surfing at Boomerang''s," boasts Sun Kings bassist Christian "Captain" Caputo, referring to the trio''s favorite Oakland bar.
The Beaver County band''s members have plenty of stories to tell, like the time the fire alarm went off and cleared the room during their Sports Rock gig, or their show on the coldest night of the winter at Margaritaville, where guitarist Dan Bubien said he could barely feel his strings.
So go the challenges for an 18-month-old band that will play its most important show yet tonight, warming up a Hard Rock crowd for Los Angeles rockers Four Way Free.
The Station Square crowd ought to be bobbing its heads, at least, thanks to the Sun Kings'' reggae-infused, modern-rock sound that sometimes veers off unexpectedly into piercing blues passages courtesy of Bubien, formerly of local blues ensemble Shades of Blue.
The Sun Kings are a young but veteran band, with Caputo coming over from the Delaneys, while drummer Tim McCullim previously pounded the sticks for File 13, Schmuck, Same Pants Different Day, Dirty Sanchez and Better Ending, bands whose names appear on his bass drum.
A March 24 hometown gig at Kelly''s Riverside Saloon in Bridgewater saw the Sun Kings shine for 2½ hours, with the band''s first set beginning with radio friendly "The Apartment Song," followed by several other originals.
Bubien''s vocals were clear and confident, and as a three-piece band there wasn''t a lot of clutter, as the Sun Kings drove through a spot-on version of Sublime''s "Badfish" and a faithful rendering of "Warehouse" by the Dave Matthews Band. For Stevie Wonder''s "Superstitious," McCullim and Caputo brought the funk as Bubien plucked out those deliciously chunky guitar leads.
Playing a roughly 70-30 percent mix of original versus cover songs, the Sun Kings have the right formula to remain a major player on the Pittsburgh bar circuit while striving toward that big break that could take them further.
