I used to work at a YMCA preschool outside of Seattle. It was a great school where the teachers and administrators really cared for the kids. They often gave training programs on how to manage behavior and improve communication. I saw, first-hand, how my actions could affect children''s behavior and their interactions with the rest of the world.
One day, after lunch, my boss gave me the kids who didn''t take naps and said, "go do something quiet with them- read a book or something." I started off reading "The Spooky Old Tree" and "Frog and Toad", when I remembered how my dad used to make up stories around the campfire. I made up this story about a misunderstood monster with big ears, bushy eyebrows and a wart on the end of its nose. The kids liked it and soon they were asking me to tell them stories out on the playground.
But I had spent seven years in engineering school and when I finally was offered a "real job", I took it. A year or two later, I found myself missing the kids, so I started telling stories to my friend''s 1st-grade class. Then day camps in Seattle. Then libraries in Portland and even nightclubs in DC. Now I''ve found out what my "real work" is and I''m telling stories, playing the ukulele, singing, and leading performance workshops for both kids and adults all over.
The day I left work at the preschool, the other teachers gave me a well-known poem with the kids'' handprints on it. When the kids asked me to read it to them, I started to choke up. For the rest of the day, the little jokers kept asking me to read it again, to see if I''d react the same way.
One hundred years from now...
it will not matter what your bank account was,
the sort of house you lived in,
or the kind of car you drove...
but the world may be a different place because you were important in the life of a child.
