The bilingual singer/songwriter known as Melissa Otero has already made a buzz with her first single "My First Everything". Her new pop/R&B sound has the audiences wanting more! Trying to create music which people can relate to, Melissa uses her own experiences as part of her inspiration. "I want people to feel my music, not just listen to it and say: Oh, it''s nice, but: Wow, this brings back memories".
Raised in Yauco, PR, Melissa was always the unusual kid growing up singing American songs from Gloria Estefan, Bette Midler, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, rather than listening to the usual reggae and salsa. Always having a rough time in talent shows because she would rather sing in English, Melissa many times found herself in last place; that is until she reached her high school years. During that time English music became more popular and kids all over her hometown idolized her for always staying true to her heart. "It''s not that I don''t like Spanish, it''s that I want to crossover into Spanish later on; and then let the world know that I actually lived most of my life in Puerto Rico. Staying true to my roots is always a big factor for me, but English was the first language that I learned and so, I knew mainly American artists and my idols are mostly english artists with the exception of Gloria Estefan."
Melissa has been singing since the age of 5. By the time she was 14 years of age, she began taking private piano lessons and private vocal lessons in her hometown. While in high school, she was in the school choir and also continued her vocal and piano lessons after school. In her senior year, she became the first student to sing in another language other than Spanish achieving the "Best Female Vocal Award" at the Luis Muñoz Marín high school "Awards Night".
As a farewell to her high school classmates, Melissa and her mother, Nellie, created her very first concert titled "Once In A Lifetime". It was a one-night-only special for anyone in her hometown who was interested in hearing her perform her music; as well as songs by her favorite artists. It was a success. Over 300 people attended the concert.
In college, Melissa''s major was Music Education, where she specialized in piano and voice. She completed two years with a 3.10 average and moved to the United States where she is currently pursuing her career. During her first year in the US, Melissa auditioned for Popstars 2 and the first season of the popular show American Idol. Both auditions contributed to her experience and Melissa then knew what she was up against. The following year, Melissa auditioned for Best New Talent Awards and she was chosen among the top 100 singers from the nation to go to LA to perform before representatives of several major record labels. There were workshops offered which included vocal lessons taught by top professors, dance lessons and other music related seminars.
Upon her return home, Melissa went on to perform for the New York International Music Festival. She performed at major venues such as Madison Square Garden, The China Club and several others. It was a showcase in which singers, dancers and other artists were allowed to perform in front of major and independent record labels.
By the end of 2004, Melissa met George Brown, a director of an upcoming Off-Broadway show Miyorka: A Different Kind Of Love Story. He was seeking to cast the role of The Fairy Godmother. Melissa was cast and production began. After almost nine months of intense rehearsals, the show was performed in The Culture Project in New York City. It was a success and ran for seventeen shows.
Since October 2005, Melissa currently works as an actress and has had the opportunity to work on the TV shows such as "The Sopranos", "Love Monkey" and "The Bedford Diaries" as well as the upcoming films "El Cantante", "Guerilla", "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and more.
