2CD set - an exploration of ''musical instinct'' - a perfect capturing of a moment.

Approximately two-thirds of the way through sessions for his second album "Slipstream Science", Dragonhead (the musical alter-ego of Andy Jones), was taken down an unexpected path. Andy writes:

"I turned my thoughts to the notion of ''musical instinct''. Every human being has the capacity to make some sort of music, whether it be
sweet, sad violin or banging a rock with a stick. I decided at that moment to try and delve into my own instinct.

I would use the tools at hand; admittedly a little more advanced than rocks and sticks. I would allow sounds to grow organically and write lyrics that were not pored over for hours. Simply close my eyes and write what comes through".

The initial results - the brooding and mesmeric tracks "Bit Part" and "A Word From Me" were so successful, that he decided to continue the theme

"I decided there and then that I would create an album in as short a time as possible. I''d use only my instincts. I would record all the sounds live, with no editorialising or post-production editing. The lyrics (where necessary) would be a series of verbal images. In the end, it took me 72 hours of intensive work to get it done.

I drafted in a little assistance from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The Irish poet, Trevor Joyce, sent me some wonderful recordings of his poetry for me to use, including his own translation of a 7th Century Chinese work. I''m incredibly grateful for that. In a way, he says things that I couldn''t express in my own voice".

Andy also enlisted the help of Laura Crichton, an electronic musician from Wisconsin who records under the name Axydlbaaxr.

"Laura''s stuff is wonderful. She uses sounds that I don''t use and layers it magnificently. I heard a track of hers called ''Transmorgue'' and so wanted to use it. We''ve worked together on a project called ''Third Track Conspiracy'' which produced some great results. It would be great to pursue that further in the future"

The first half of ''Films Without Pictures'' consists of this material. It throbs and grows, diminishes to near silence and all points in between. The ''Next Stop'' series of pieces display thematic similarities - like gazing at a sculpture from all angles - different facets display different attributes. They act as waymarkers through the album, transporting the listener from one phase to the next.

The second half of ''Films Without Pictures'' contains one piece - the 45 minute bliss-out of ''O Yasumi Nasai''. This drifting, soothing track is designed specifically to induce a sense of calm and well being

"Well, it should do. I wrote it for my little boy when he was tiny to send him happily off to sleep! I''m really proud of this piece - it''s really personal to me and it''s great that I can send it out into the big, wide mean old world on its own at last. It''s something I wanted to get out for a while, but it doesn''t really fit in with my other stuff".

So here it is - ''Films Without Pictures'' - the unexpected second album from Dragonhead.

Dragonhead is Andy Jones of Nottingham, England.
His first album "Some Kind Of Idiot" is also still available from CD Baby.
