Christmas Meditations is a collection of six traditional Advent & Christmas hymns plus three originals. It is my hope that this record will bring you the peace & comfort it brought me while making it. Merry Christmas!
Musical Notes
Emmanuel
Perhaps one of the more mysterious & enchanting Advent melodies, I sought to further deepen this traditional hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” with the use of extended breaks between phrases.
Mary Says Yes
Timid & uncertain playing in the beginning represents Mary as she listens to Gabriel explain his presence. As Mary begins to understand & accept, the melody solidifies as Mary says yes.
Joseph Dreams
During this recording, I thought of Joseph and how he must have tossed and turned, questioning & eventually accepting his role.
The King Shall Come
This song is one of the lesser known Advent songs but one that lures me in with its melody and text “The King shall come when morning dawns and light triumphant breaks, when beauty gilds the eastern hills and life to joy awakes”. This imagery inspired me as I improvised on this longing and distant melody.
A Child Is Born
This piece tries to capture the gentle & joyous pregnancy of Mary in the first two minutes or so, eventually deepening as Mary wonders about “this child” she carries within her.
Bethlehem
Listen carefully on this one because you may not hear this timeless melody at first. On the evening of October 5, I went to bed thinking this record was done but woke up hours later with this arrangement in mind. I grabbed a cup of coffee, ran to the studio and recorded what you now hear at 6 in the morning. This was a fun approach to this Christmas classic and one I feel is some of my best work to date. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed performing it!
The Manger
Most likely, you will not recognize the melody here but this is the song “Away In The Manger” in a minor key. I felt the idea of an infant born on a cold and bitter night with “no crib for his bed” deserved a sharper tone. I have taken many liberties here to bring that night closer to what it probably was: bitterly cold, surreal and eventually one of peace.
This Child
One of my favorite versions of this song, “This Child” captures the tenderness of the infant Jesus. Listening back to this, I cannot remember recording it and am surprised to hear what I played. I am not sure I can pull this off again so enjoy this.
Silent Night
Perhaps the most loved Christmas songs of all time, it was important to capture the peace and hope such a classic evokes in the listener while retaining the meditative nature from the rest of the album. Considering all this, it is no wonder this song challenged me the most. After recording roughly 5 takes or so of various styles and lengths, I eventually settled for this take where the melody is not always apparent. However I am sure, the listener will fill in the holes.
