Details:
The source material used to create the tracks that make up - afield - is derived nearly entirely of field recordings made in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Paris. These recordings were initially made for their intrinsic interest alone and not necessarily with any musical use in mind. I like listening back to audio recordings from various locations and spaces out of context to hear all of the subtle nuances that can go unnoticed until isolated. I began to experiment with ways to process these recordings to alter and enhance them in an effort to draw out more traditionally “musical” qualities with respect to ambient composition.

The primary technique used to create these tracks involved tuning the recordings. This provided the musical foundation that was then manipulated further to form the original sources into the finished album. While still minimalistic and true to the style to which I gravitate this set of tracks have a somewhat random quality which is a direct result of the naturally occurring events captured in the field recordings.

It is this capturing of events, of a time and place that initially caught my interest. The mystery and discovery that comes with finding a new location in which to work and revisiting the recordings later to hear further details not heard while “live” in the environment, is endlessly inspiring. This directly connects me and the work to the world at large in a way that expands my sense of working solely in the studio. I find this very appealing and complimentary to my usual methods because these tracks still reflect a sense of openness and space conducive to contemplation and introspection while still expressing the literal spaces from which they originate.
