Details:
Pairs Well With Crying Alone was written and recorded by Zach in his apartment over the course of about 6 months. Lush vocal harmonies (with some help from some help from his wife, Shannon) wash over electric guitar, keys, ukulele, bass and percussion. The project has a slightly “caffeinated” feel with upbeat tempos and short, punchy hooks. Even through these are a musical departure from his other musical projects (The Drownies, Shouting Street) it has the same introspective lyrical feel.

“Our building is next to a major road that leads to a hospital, so I occasionally had to redo a take when an ambulance screamed past with sirens blaring in the middle of recording.
But even so, I loved recording at the apartment. I could tinker with the sounds, and be much more of a perfectionist than I could ever be in the studio. It really was a lot of fun to record”

Lyrics

Strange Courage:
I don’t speak to myself anymore, and I won’t be seen with me (not in the passenger, not in the backseat). I’m shrugging my hand off my shoulder. You were in the right lane, listening to right lane radio: “today’s hits without the black” = “today’s hits living back.” Take an arrow from your quiver, taking aim and deliver, stuck in my skin like a sliver. Sitting in your driveway I knew, savaging for traces of you. Now to be familiar seems frightening and new. So don’t go shrugging my hand off your shoulder

Pairs Well With Crying Alone:
You look like a (Lois) Lowry child, raised on sorrows not your own, those borrowed curses for your home. Back and back and back and back…Pairs well with crying alone. When we meet I’m reminded of sagging barns on a country scene. Just stand or fall, no in between! Pairs well with crying alone. Back and back and back and back…

I Haven’t Been:
It’s the city botanical gardens for me. I haven’t been, but I’ve been meaning to. Now winter’s on it’s way and not likely to change anytime soon. There’s ivy there that climbs wall like green flame, and jade trees that bloom once in a century. I made a promise to myself I’d grab the next chance with both hands.

En Garde:
Every word recalled, every word contained. Just a letter to myself, it’s my heart filling up and up and… Unspoken worries that your eyes say. Don’t call this trouble, just leave them that way. Won’t you pour me out some of your milk of human kindness? I’ll ignore your call, on guard for distain. Just a letter to myself, it’s my hear filling up and up and… Unspoken worries that your eyes say. Don’t call this trouble, just leave them that way. Won’t you pour me out some of your milk of human kindness?
