Fifteen of Asher Quinn''s most popular songs from his long association with New World Music, re-recorded entirely here in a simplified, purer format to be ~ on the one hand ~ a little more acoustic and less orchestrated, and on the other to have the feel of a string quartet underneath his warm, inviting vocals.
These tracks thus become predominantly piano or twelve-string guitar based, with overlays of cello, viola and double bass, along with warm pads and occasional light percussion. The whole more direct and intimate approach is beautifully enhanced by the additional, ethereal vocals of Hungarian gypsy singer Lila Mayi.
Several of these songs, already well-known to Asher Quinn fans, become quite transformed, and at times even more transcendent with this innovative treatment. The effect is quite spell-binding, with a unique alchemy binding them together. There is a delicate beauty in the arrangements which recalls the romance of the minstrel or troubadour of old.
''Fiery moon'' now has intensely romantic lyrics for the first time, and ''Open secret'' becomes suffused with an evocative, pastoral, almost Arthurian magic, due in no small part to the use of the harp and cor Anglais. The extraordinary Greek Orthodox kyrie that is the ''Missa Greca'' becomes here a swirling, swaying, hypnotic Zorba-esque folk reel over and above the sacred nature of the original. The title of this very unusual new-age album perfectly describes the other-dimensional, high vibrational nature of the music.
