Details:
Shakespeare once wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on.” In a debut album that is uniquely editorial, “Things The Willow Told Me” is a decadent four-course meal. With reference to shared love, lost love, or merely the love of music, there’s something here for everybody. It begins with a modest tool kit consisting of an acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, saxophone, a condenser mic and a laptop. From here recording artist Gordon Hall crafted a collection of analogue recordings digitally engineered to create a unique and timeless sound featuring haunting melodies that are dispersed through poetic complexity at every turn. It is music that builds bridges between traditional genres, crosses them, then sublimates them into an eclectic yet unified album. Sometimes nostalgic and at another times forward reaching, it is a journey that unfolds through eleven tracks in varying tempos that in one way or another represent the whimsical, spiritual, tragic and transcendental emotions that people experience every day over the backdrop of the murky cypress swamp in eastern North Carolina where the artist, a practicing architect, currently resides. For him, this album is itself an architectural experience, which is to say that it is a well composed palimpsest of light, form, color and texture not only in the way its own space is rendered but also in the way it occupies the space in which it is experienced. The formal compositions seem virtuous in their own right, but it is within the musical space that the artist challenges the listener with artfully conceived dualities of clarity and obscurity, harmony and dissonance, continuity of form and space, surface and structure, development and variation. Pairings of quirky slide guitar riffs overlaid with elegant neoclassical style acoustic string melodies evolve anachronistically alongside a myriad of other unexpected juxtapositions to create provocative musical dialogues. Instrumentation and underlying structure provide way-finding clues which assist the listener through structured improvisations which, like the swamp forest that inspired them, are organic, primordial and surreal. Within any given track the listener is drawn into a cathartic experience as the artist sets a course of action, then appears to recalibrate in order to capitalize on each expressive opportunity. In a body of work that would appear to be thematic in nature, the overriding theme seems simply to be the idea of innovation, guided sometimes by cause and effect and at other times purely by serendipity. Roots music with a pulse, this brand of experimental blues, jazz, folk, rock fusion is a metaphor for life and in a world that seems to be struggling with progress, "Things The Willow Told Me" is an exhilarating departure and perhaps even a place of refuge.
