A bit of a long story for how this came about...
It was sparked by a song I heard on the radio (BBC3). I am not sure of the title. Max Reinhardt''s Late Junction Session (broadcast Thursday 20th May, 2010) featured drummer Seb Rochford, mbira player & vocalist Chartwell Dutiro, guitarist Leo Abrahams, and vocalist/rapper Jyager and this song was second in the session. I was just so enraptured. The song feels a little bitter sweet, but hopeful, even if teary-eyed. It starts with a gorgeous mbira riff, drum and guitar creeping in so gently before you realise they''re dancing around the mbira. Over this beautiful music begins the rhythm of words, sung and spoken, and when I first heard the chorus, I wanted to write something like that about moments in music like that.
So my song is about distinct moments dancing to particular live music in a particular place, and the people that made it so magic. But really it could be about any time, music, place and persons that make you feel good.
Ultimately it is about the magic of music - how it is transporting, how it takes you over, takes you somewhere else, somewhere higher, or deeper, how it can make everything better, a moment perfect, how it brings people together, how it manifests bliss, humanity, unity in a room of people, corny though that may all sound.
To record it, I borrowed from some very generous people mbira, nyunga nyunga, djembe and percussion and took along my bass and small hand drum. I composed a couple simple melodies or chords for the instruments and recreated an electronic loop I liked with my more organic beats. I wrote harmony lines - a couple low, mostly high - and sang a few takes of each so the final mix had layered vocals.
I also designed the album art and have a few physical copies for sale on my website.
The Humming of the Earth Here was made with 100% love, so even if you don''t like it, I am sure it might be good for you. It may well have healing properties.
