1: a science that deals with the composition, structure, and properties of substances and with the transformations that they undergo

Bassist and composer John Madere’s debut album Chemistry represents Webster’s first definition precisely: it is a collection of compositions that undergo various transformations in substance and form over the course of each track. At just 28 years of age, he has been able to assemble an album-length project of original, creative, and personal music that manages to be fresh, and yet very listenable and uncannily familiar. For example, just listen to his 4:1. If that melody isn’t stuck in your head for the next week by the end of the track, perhaps you’re just not listening. AEIO, one of his first original compositions, exudes an entirely different feeling; in fact, one might say it’s downright slippery. The title track serves as a catalyst for the commanding guitar of John Bishop (and myself on flügelhorn) and contains some of Madere’s most adventurous harmonic writing, exploring the emotional characteristics of various modes. With Drew, arguably Madere’s composition most resembling a jazz standard, begins to loosely swing in the solo section and serves a vehicle for Madere’s compelling voice as an improvising bassist, and for the captivating Brad Walker.

2a : a strong mutual attraction, attachment, or sympathy

Here again the dictionary hits the album title squarely on the conceptual head (or is it the other way around?). The simpatico in the rhythm section between Madere, pianist Willis Delony, guitarist Bishop, and the unfaltering drummer Brandon Hays is undeniable. Also, the clever pairing of The Morning is Always Wiser… and …Than the Night represents both John’s compositional instinct and wisdom; it shows he knows when to prescribe the material using harmony and counterpoint and when to trust his soloists to create the effect spontaneously and organically.

2b : interaction between people working together; specifically : such interaction when harmonious or effective

For this recording, John has managed to assemble a group of musicians seriously devoted to bringing his compositions to life and who genuinely enjoy each other’s company, neither of which is a small feat in the music world. You’ll hear this throughout the recording, but especially during the colorful group interplay between Brad Walker, Jeff Albert (who also mixed and mastered this recording), and myself on There’s Always A Bus (a loving homage to our notorious post-Katrina traffic here in Baton Rouge). There was also lots of great discussion, debate, and laughter between takes in the studio. I can honestly say that there’s no group of jazz musicians I’d rather work or play with. (For musicians it’s the same thing, right?)

It is an honor (and as one of his teachers for a short time more, a point of pride) for me to be able to write these brief notes for John’s premiere record. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we did making it. Keep your eyes out – and your ears open – for John Madere: bassist, arranger, and composer.

Maybe I should get a lesson…
