I have grown weary of secular, commercial white-toothed TV people trying to tell me something about the “True Meaning” of Christmas. Christmas has many meanings, and many truths. There are plenty of great songs that tell the Christmas story, plenty that celebrate the accoutrements, and plenty of “It’s Christmas. Let’s be sweethearts” songs. I love these songs, but I feel there is more to say.
The reality of “God With Us” is massive and humbling. The responsibility of being a father is also massive and humbling. In this record, I explore my own thoughts about Christmas. What does Christmas tell us about God? How can I be a Christian in the 21st century, maintain my intellectual integrity, live the way I think God wants me to live, and still engage the world in a real and meaningful way? Why does my extended family have only boys? Are these boys truly incapable of doing anything but play video games?* These are important questions. I try to answer them.
My goal as a songwriter is to be as honest and raw as possible. Most contemporary Christian music is bland and shallow. We are meant to be salt of the earth. Let us throw some more salt in our music. As you listen to this record, I hope you will go on an emotional and spiritual journey, and at the end, you just might have one or two ways of looking at Christmas that you didn’t have before.
