Biography
Music has always been an integral part of Janina''s life. She is multi-talented, writing poetry and short stories and communicating the written word as well as singing and dancing. Thus she learned her craft at a very young age, listening and singing to the radio and performing in the livingroom of the family home. Teachers at school noticed that she had perfect pitch in music and she was often asked to sing solo in choirs and community events.
At the age of 11, Janina won the best performer award at the CKY Talent Show in Winnipeg, Canada. It wasn''t until she really found her native roots on her father''s side that she connected deeply with who she was, and this propelled her towards a career in music. They were pickers, singers, and artists, and so she had an awakening when she was given her father''s recordings and his guitar.
In 1985, Janina''s constant companion was her six string Fender guitar. She also attended a performing arts school in Winnipeg where she studied classical voice training with Brenda Bakos. Here she studied music theory and history, jazz, ear training, sight reading, performance ensemble and many other workshops and classes.
In 1989, Janina began looking for a fresh change in her creativity and she began singing for children at community centers and preschools and in 1991 moved to British Columbia. She continued to perform for children at festivals and concerts, receiving excellent reviews.
Janina wrote the music and lyrics for her children''s album "Colors of the Rainbow,", exploring music from around the world. The album was produced by Olav Rixen, a Juno Award nominee. This fun, yet educational album, which she wrote, specifically for children, is also greatly enjoyed by parents and teachers.
The album is being relaeaed digitally for the first time, and is also being re-released for physical distribution in the near future (wide distribution for the first time).
Janina has also been recording other material in the past number of years, and is currently releasing some of it in singles form. Her ability to traverse genres of music will be clearly reflected, as well as her ability to write for an adult audience, in addition to her chiildren''s music.
Janina Russell''s music is dedicated to the child in each of us, and hopes to exert a positive influence by appealing to our sense of wonder and enchantment about our world. She feels that we are all one family, and we can connect with the beauty of our different cultures on this planet and live in peace and harmony with one another.
