Details:
This third album, American Gypsy, comes closest to Vint’s concept of gypsy rock. Mathilda’s haunting classically inspired improvisations stand out as the primary instrumentation. However, backed by well-known musicians such as bass player Lanis Loyd (who toured with Gatemouth Brown) and Phil Collins’ former flute player Danny Wilding, this album is rich in musical texture.

As both executive producer and engineer, Vint was able to tailor the sound exactly to his vision, while staying true to the sound that he and Mathilda had been developing over the years of touring and playing together. Recorded at High Desert Studios in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the album is a mix of eastern influenced arrangements such as “Endless Blue,” a cover of Dylan’s “One More Cup of Coffee” with gypsy violins and the western influenced “Halfway to Heaven” to the unclassifiable instrumental “Buffalo Song,” composed and performed by Mathilda on violins and viola.

As with Vint & Mathilda’s first two albums, “Wanted” and “Ghost in My Dreams,” the lyrics range from the sublime ‘Thin Air,’ to the social satire of ‘House of Cards’ and the light hearted humor of ‘Smokey Barroom Blues’ and ‘Halfway to Heaven.’

According to Vint, “While I had no intention of having any western influenced songs on this album, it seems that I can’t fully escape my roots. Many of these songs were written on the rooftop of my house in Santa Fe, looking out at the back of the Sandia Mountains or the Sangre de Cristos during one sunset or another. So even songs I originally wrote while living in Spain such as “Endless Blue,” have a touch of the west in them. We have often been plagued by our unique blend of western, folk and classical influences. Many commercial radio stations over the years have said that we’re too western for commercial rock stations and yet we’re not country enough for country/western stations. Oh well.”
