Details:
“Somebody Else” was originally written for a film that was set in France in the 1950’s. The criteria set down by the music supervisor for the writing of the song was that it was to be written in the style of American or French jazz of the time period or before. And, more importantly, that it SOUND like a recording from the time, both in performance and sonically.

We took on this challenge with only a five day window to get the song written and recorded by the deadline. Having an array of Period instruments at our disposal from our live Tribute Show*, we got down to business. Using an original arch top Marvel acoustic guitar (a Gibson look-alike) from the 1930’s and an old Jacob Doll upright piano from the turn of the last century, we set about laying down tracks using vintage reproduction microphones; placing them as they would have been placed for recordings of that time.

Since Stardust is a duo and I am the only instrumentalist, multi-track recording was necessary to play all the instruments. However, we remained faithful to the compression qualities and equalization properties of the old recordings and, using several as reference, created what we feel is an accurate new rendering of an old style recording. Becca also listened to old recordings of Frances Langford and other female vocalists of the time to gain an insight into the enunciation and tonal qualities of a woman’s vocal style from that era. She also tried her hand at writing (for the first time) and authored the lyrics while I composed the music.

The result of that truly collaborative and experimental effort is “Somebody Else.” And even though the song was not ultimately selected for the film, the creative process we used to get the ‘job’ done was worth the time in itself to try new things and to steer ourselves in a direction we may not have taken otherwise.

A slideshow-type video of the song can be seen on YouTube and stars Arizona model and vintage fashion entrepreneur, Sydney Ballesteros, in a series of black and white still photographs that present an interesting visual storyline.

Thank you for listening. And thank you for your interest in our little corner of the musical world.
