><: Level 2 (2008) is the second longform "hyper-cinema" film by Arturo Cubacub and Sarah Weis. It uses sexual metaphors to explore the seldom discussed issue of petrodollar politics. The world of the movie is a parallel world, not inhabited by humans but by currencies. This is a world purely driven by power, numbers and “value”, almost completely devoid of emotion as we know it. The action takes place at a breaking point, with a monumental shift in the air and a monumental drive to stop it.
To create a sound environment that reinforced the mechanical atmosphere of this world, in which Kathryn Korosi (Euro) and I (Dolly) in fact are human and not currency, Arturo edited the action to the rhythm of the soundtrack and vice-versa. Sounds were constantly being made, moved around and altered throughout post-production and by the end I had digitally processed every single natural sound in the movie to achieve a cold, metallic feel.
This soundtrack marks my first foray into drum machines and it was a lot of fun to create not only beats, but all kinds of sounds with a new instrument. I experimented with ridiculously slow BPMs (55 on tracks 1-10 and then it grows from there) and extremely low frequencies, some meant more to be felt than heard. ))))))))))))))))))
If you buy the whole album, I suggest listening all the way through at least once, as it really works well in that context. After all, it is a musical ;) I hope you enjoy the sounds as much as I enjoyed the process! xoxo$arah
Movie Synopsis and Background:
Dolly is THE MA$TER and will stop at nothing to maintain her status. However, her biggest competitor has, over time, become her secret lover, protégé and most precious slave. Tonight the two have a private appointment in Dolly''s covert lair, but each suspects that something is about to change forever. Does Dolly''s beloved plaything have something up her sleeve? Or is it the other way around? A rhythmic and glittering tale of money, power and perhaps... love. Greater Than Less Than: Level 2 is a petrol-fueled neo-depression era musical about international economics. The two main characters personify The Dollar and The Euro in this heavily symbolic ''adult edutainment'' film, based on an original performance piece developed by Sarah Weis with Kathryn Korosi for their performance art group, ''The Super-Cool Sluuts of America!''. A working prototype of director Arturo Cubacub''s self-invented Hyper-Cinema Camera (currently in development), was used for the first time in this project! /// Additional Info: The idea for the story was inspired by conversations between Arturo and Sarah about the petro-dollar and the hidden agendas behind the war in the Middle East concerning currency dominance. It is a popular belief that the Iraqi War started in order to simply "get more oil", but the truth underneath was much more complex. This film is about America''s fight to maintain the dominance of the US Dollar while the threat of the Euro''s ability to replace it as the World Reserve Currency appeared to grow more real each day. The U.S. isn''t ready to give up her role as "The Master", but maybe it''s time she figured out a better tactic...not to mention better priorities.
