Details:
Formed in 1987 in Pittsburgh, PA, The Damaged Pies have gone on to play and record at some of the most legendary venues and studios all across North America and the United Kingdom. From CBGB''s in New York City to the Whisky-a-go go in Hollywood, from Liverpool''s Cavern to Nashville''s Tootsies, from Cleveland''s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Chicago''s Wrigley Field, from Sun Studio in Memphis to Trident Studios in London, from San Francisco to Toronto, from Athens to Akron, from Cubby Bears in Chicago to Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, from the Wheeling Jamboree to Boston to Philly to Pittsburgh''s Electric Banana, Decade and Club Cafe, the Pies have followed the path tracing the history of rock and roll and in some small way have placed themselves along this trail as well.
The Damaged Pies were founded in Murrysville, Pa, just outside of Pittsburgh, by Billy Laspin (keyboards and vocals) and Steve Bodner (guitars). The band quickly added Mark Pintea (drums) and rounded out the original line-up with Mike Bodner (bass). This line-up played its first gig at Pittsburgh’s Electric Banana on December 8, 1988.
This line-up recorded the mostly Laspin penned concept album, Second Thoughts at Bodner’s parent’s basement in Murrysville. The album was recorded live due to being recorded on a home stereo with two microphone inputs. The idea of a concept record would lay the foundation for many more Damaged Pies operettas and song cycles to come. This line-up began work on a follow-up album entitles Terminal Street, but only got half way through it when line-up changes ensued. Both albums musically were a very fresh garage art rock sound with Laspin’s Beatlesque vocals on top of the slightly odd mix of harpsichord keyboards, Keith Moon-like drums and Television sounding guitars and bass.
The next addition to the band was vocalist Margie Michel, whom would later become Mrs. Mark Pintea. With the addition of a new singer and two new writers in Michel and Steve Bodner, the music took a folksier turn. Although, it very much kept the original vibe forged early on by Laspin, who would rejoin the band for a brief stint during this period. Laspin would go on to form his own art rock band, Brain Clay at this time.
The Michel, Bodner, Pintea, Bodner line-up would record two albums of original material, The Damaged Pies and Classifieds. This line-up would expand at times to include additional guitars, vocals, bass and keyboards, but would retain its core members. Notable in this vein are the additions of bassist Steve Appleby, whom would appear and disappear throughout the band’s various changes. Also this marks the band’s first of three appearances at New York City’s legendary CBGB’s.
The running theme of line-up changes persisted and Michel and Pintea would go onto form Simple Truth and the Pies would again go on as a solo act with just Steve Bodner performing acoustically for the first time. This era became significant in that it ushered in the era of significant touring for the Pies.
Bodner was next joined by Karl Smeltzer (bass and cello) and Komron Maknoon (drums). No recording was done except two live performances were captured at CBGB’s and J.C. Dobbs in Philadelphia. The music was more garage rock and the three piece stripped down acoustic added another layer to the band’s sound.
Again, line-up changes occurred and Lisa Martin (vocals) was added. The interesting thing was the sound harkened back to more Michel era Pies, but now with the more garage feel of the last incarnation. This line-up consisting of Martin, Bodner, Jim McCabe (bass) and Greg Luhanik (drums) went onto record three albums, A Year of Tuesdays, Lee’s Musical Misfits and a concept album entitled Hometown Sweethearts, a reference to the group’s lack of support in their hometown. This CD also featured Hershel Gelman (keyboards).
Of course line-up changes ensued with Martin going on to form an acoustic duo, Cindy Lou Who, with Pies, second vocalist and guitarist, added after Hometown Sweethearts, Patty Owens.
The band of course would carry on and this time things got a bit heavier. Dave Warren (guitar), Bodner, McCabe and Billy Taylor (drums) made a new noise, mostly thanks to Warren’s incredibly unique guitar style. The band would go on to record an EP, Napalm and a full length CD, Redbeardown Two Steps Behind. The touring continued with a notable performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. This performance was captured on the DVD, The Last Tango in Cleveland.
New paragraph means new line-up and Bodner carried on acoustically recording a new CD of old and new Pies songs at Sun Studio in Memphis, as well as extensive touring across the US, Canada and England. A highlight of this touring was Bodner, along with Steven E. Adams performing at the Cavern in Liverpool
Steve Appleby returned with Brian Habrel (drums) and although the band didn’t record, they did play a very significant show at the Wheeling Jamboree. The Pies had gone country. Well not quite, but it was just one more flavor thrown into the musical mix that the band’s sound had become.
Well more solo touring for Bodner and a reunion with Hershel Gelman produced the Popalectric CD. The disc was recorded in sections at AMG Studio in Pittsburgh, Solar Noon in Silver Springs, Maryland and Trident Studios in London. Yes, that Trident Studios in London famous for the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, David Bowie, Genesis and Queen, just to name a few. Popalectric is definitely a product of the band’s long musical history. There are four sections of the CD, very much steeped in the operettas and song cycles of Damaged Pies past and it is truly a journey from the forests of England to 70’s AM Top 40 radio stations, to the Wild West to Paris. The disc is available for digital download on CD Baby, I-Tunes and Amazon.
