An unquestionably talented musician, award-winning singer/ songwriter David Lynch continues to write and perform music that people gravitate to, simply because he writes about things people can relate to, and he sings purely from his soul.
Lynch has pioneered what has been called “California Bluegrusion,” a fusion of musical styles built on the foundation of blues and folk, with the tranquil spirit of the acoustic coastal sound. California Bluegrusion has been infused into every aspect of his music, from the raw attack of the acoustic guitar, to the heartfelt sound that makes it feel as if he’s singing only for you, the listener.
Lynch treks the musical road never traveled, with his journey giving rise
to his prior three albums, “David Lynch”, “Good Wood,” and “Dozen,”
as well his newest album release, “I Can See Sound.”
Music has been an integral part of David’s life since his childhood. David grew up in Malibu, California, and started writing his first songs in the fifth grade. Since then his passion for music and songwriting has continued to flourish. A natural born musician, Lynch is a self-taught guitar player, and his lyrics have been inspired by his coastal Southern California hometown, his many and varied life experiences, and the cultural differences that set us apart and tie us to one another.
Throughout this journey, David has become somewhat of a Renaissance man. As a husband, a father to three children, he has also become a renowned and successful sound editor, winning an Emmy Award and two Golden Reel Awards, as well as being nominated for 10 Emmy Awards and 15 Golden Reel Awards in audio post-production. Lynch found his love for post-production sound editing while attending UC Santa Barbara, where he spent countless hours multi-tracking original songs and overdubbing. This is where his future as a serious musician first took flight.
Lynch has placed in 7 national song writing contests, including 3-time finalist at the Sierra Songwriters Contest in Sonora, California, a 2-time finalist at the Founders Title Folk and Bluegrass Festival in Park City, Utah, and as a finalist at both the Sisters Music Festival in Sisters, Oregon, and the Tumbleweed Music Festival in Richland, Washington. Lynch went through a phase of entering songwriting contests, and he consistently made it to the finals.
“I think I was looking for some self assurance about the quality of my work at that time, and although I am past the songwriting contest part of my career, I submitted 3 of the unfinished tracks from “I Can See Sound” to the New Times Music Awards as a bit of a test, and we won honorable mention awards for both Songwriting and for Blues/R&B, which was gratifying.
In 2009, I stopped in Santa Barbara for the Old Time Fiddlers Convention. It is a festival I used to attend when I was a student at UCSB and I actually had won a first place singing award years ago for singing an a cappella version of “The Farmer’s Cursed Wife”. I was on my way home from a gig in Los Angeles and on a lark, I entered the competition and used one of my $30 Stella’s with dead strings. I ended up winning a 3rd place award for advanced guitar.” –Lynch
David has performed at hundreds of venues throughout the U.S. One year, he spent 3 months on the road, with a month each in both Austin, TX and Nashville, TN on his way to reaching a self-set goal of 100 live performances. One of the venues included the acclaimed Bluebird Café, where he was quickly welcomed into the invitation-only Sunday night rotation.
What’s more, David has played the Tucson Folk Festival twice – on both the Courtyard Stage and Main Stage – as well as other events such as the Live Oak Music Festival, the Green Rockin Festival, the Pozo Springtime Boogie, the California Mid State Fair, and the San Luis Obispo Garden Festival. Lynch’s live performances have showcased his immense talent, and his light-hearted stories and charisma between tracks have drawn crowds of all ages.
After returning to California, David’s public demand and fan base have steadily climbed. One reason for his recent local success has been a flurry of winery bookings for his band.
“The wine tasting crowd is willing to try new music, and they actually want to hear the lyrics. People are buying all three of my early CDs, after hearing us play only two songs… We recorded “Dozen” as a “live” album because the winery crowds wanted to buy a CD that sounded like what we were playing (guitar, mandolin and dobro).” -Lynch
His music appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds, perhaps because it approaches universal topics with a boldness and irreverence that touches the listener below the surface of culture and demography:

David’s music makes for a balanced exploration of the socially and spiritually relevant aspects and emotions of life. Now with the release of his fourth album, Lynch’s musical range grows even more accessible and at the same time defies attempts to be labeled.
“David Lynch,” his self-titled debut album of solo guitar and vocals, was produced by Lee Popa (who toured with Macy Gray). Released by Nidus Music Productions, the album sports two slide guitar tunes and a double necked 12-string guitar tune, as well as several nylon-stringed guitar tunes. Lynch explains:
“I gave Lee a couple of hours worth of songs I had recorded at home, and he chose the cuts he wanted me to cover on the record. We recorded to 2-inch tape at the famous Soundcastle Studios in Los Angeles.”
Following up his debut album with the raw and powerful “Good Wood” CD (also solo guitar and vocals), Lynch further pushed the envelope for original guitar style and songwriting. “Good Wood” was recorded directly to 2-inch tape at producer Steve Refling’s Venice, California studio.
Lynch and Refling initially recorded 27 tunes, and chose 14 to be included on Good Wood. Many different guitars were used, including a 1930''s Regal F hole. The recording is very personal. Lynch recalls, “Steve told me to ‘relax and let go.’ I wanted to hear the squeaks and the movements and the string noise. I wanted it to feel like I was in your living room, and I wanted to connect.”

Building on these initial two albums, Lynch has been able cultivate an even larger following of fans with his third CD, “Dozen,” which is essentially a live studio album filled with playful musical dialogue between three different instruments: guitar, dobro and mandolin. Each of these instruments is in a different tuning, and together they reveal a rich and creative musical language that has been developed and refined at beaches, campsites and family gatherings.
The consistent thread holding everything together is the nationally recognized songwriting and singing of David Lynch, who penned 10 of the 12 cuts on Dozen. The album delivers eclectic California Bluegrusion from the first cut, “Udu Jelly” (originally developed with Los Angeles drummer friend Jason Oliver on the “Udu”), to the final cut, “Boats and Trains,” a contemplative optimistic look at the meaning of life through the eyes of a broken heart….

“Dozen” was engineered and co-produced by Steve Refling, who showed up with a car full of home made microphones and magic boxes containing vintage tubes and wires. There were no overdubs or pitch fixing anywhere on the album – just the pure, unadulterated sound of three talented musicians in an energetic, live performance.
David’s newest CD release, “I Can See Sound,” is his first true studio album. Thoughtfully designed from start to finish, “I Can See Sound” is a throwback to the days when albums were more like complete works of musical art, rather than a single track or two of polished tunes accompanied by filler material. Designed with the intent of playing like a book or a movie, the album’s cadence is fluid from beginning to end. Time and thought has been given to each track so that they flow intricately together, yet each also stands firmly on its own.
The central emphasis of “I Can See Sound” is definitely rooted in David’s unique songwriting and lyrical expressiveness, capturing and vocalizing Lynch’s own stories and life experiences. David worked with Mike Geringer, the project’s Executive Producer, to initially identify a list of songs that had been road tested in front of audiences and then to develop the framework for the album. Once in the studio, Steve Refling helped sketch out the songs, choosing time signatures and brainstorming a range of possible treatments for unlocking the full potential of each tune.
