Murphy has recorded 5 CD’s, he’s received awards and recognition for his songwriting, he’s performed at hundreds of venues and shared the stage with some of the most respected artists on the American music scene. He’s also a nice guy with a warm presence and infectious smile.
John Platt, host of “Sunday Breakfast” on WFUV FM in New York City described Jersey based singer-songwriter Dave Murphy as “the real deal.” During an on-air interview Platt asked Murphy; “being from the northeast, how is it that your music has such a feel of the American heartland?” Murphy paused and answered; “well John… it’s because I like milk.” Funny guy that Dave Murphy.
On his 5th CD "Yellow Moon" to be released in January 2011, Murphy offers up a collection of songs that he wrote after a breakup and a move from Brooklyn back to Jersey. The CD also includes a remake of his song “Under the Lights” and a cover of the Steve Earle song “You’re Still Standing There.”
Commenting on the new record, Murphy says; “Sure it’s a break-up record…not there’s anything wrong with that.” He goes on to say; “but more importantly it’s also a record about getting-up, moving-on and gaining a new understanding. Sometimes we need these experiences to grow…the songs are raw and personal, but I think people will embrace them, it’s a record I had to make.”
The songs are unabashedly personal yet they will draw you in with their disarming honesty, poetic wisdom and rye humor. On the sardonic opening track “What Was I Thinking” Murphy pleads, with tongue firmly planted in-cheek (“Now I’m stranded in Jersey/Please show me some mercy/It could be worse/But I’m stranded in Jersey”) On “I’m Alright” a tune that pays homage to Neil Young, Murphy opens the song with “You can’t change a heart/No matter how you try/It always ends up the same”) and on “Stumbling Towards Grace” Murphy muses (“Through the twists and the turns and the dreams that have died hard/ I’ve still got some songs inside this old guitar”)
Murphy’s voice and acoustic guitar are supported by strait forward folk & roots-rock arrangements courtesy of a group of A-List musicians he has worked with before including Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, SNL Band…), David Henry (Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse, Slaid Cleaves…) and long time collaborator Marc Muller (Steve Forbert, Shania Twain, Phil Roy…).
Under the Lights, released in 1998 was Murphy’s solo debut album. Honest, intimate and revealing, this collection of original tunes reflected Murphy’s personal journey up until that point. Performing Songwriter selected Under the Lights as a prestigious Top- 12 DIY Pick in December 1999.

In 2000 he released the EP Things I Can’t Forget a 7-song sampler featured songs recorded by Murphy and the acoustic group he was performing with at the time. The group was Abbie Gardner (Red Molly), Rick Gedney (Open Book) and Cadence Carroll (Sloan Wainwright, the Kennedy’s).
Chasing Ghosts, released in 2003 was essentially a true collaboration between Murphy and the talented multi-instrumentalist/producer Marc Muller (Steve Forbert, Shania Twain, Phil Roy.) Chasing Ghosts has a more polished and cinematic feel to it compared to his other recordings.

Graced by a guest appearances by Grammy nominated troubadour Steve Forbert and back-up vocals throughout from Columbia recording artist Nicole Atkins, Chasing Ghosts received significant airplay on Americana and Triple-A radio stations across the country. It was a “Top 5-most added” CD on the national “Americana Music Charts” and it spent over 12 weeks on the national “Top 35” Folk Airplay Charts at one point reaching as high as number 11.
In late 2003, as Chasing Ghosts was gaining momentum on the radio charts, Murphy was diagnosed with kidney cancer. A successful surgery and a full recovery followed. Murphy continues to this day to embrace that period of his life as a time of physical healing and spiritual growth.
On his 4th solo release, 2008’s Stories from Snake Hill, Murphy again teams up with Marc Muller. On Stories…It is evident that Dave is hitting his stride as a songwriter with such songs as “Chesapeake,” “Scarecrows” and “Lost & Loney Heart.” Simple unaffected vocals and acoustic guitar supported by a stellar backing band featuring Marc Muller, Shawn Pelton and Zev Katz.
Listenting to his music, you might hear echo’s (faint or otherwise) of Steve Earle, John Prine, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons as well as some of their influences including; Woody Guthrie, Townes Van Zandt and Hank Williams.
Why a comparison to Raymond Carver? Perhaps for Murphy’s minimalist approach and inclination towards “brevity and intensity." Murphy strives to peel away the layers and go deeper in search of that place where the truth lives, exposing it, often from a unique and unexpected perspective.
He takes you on a lyrical pilgrimage through the American soul, whether he’s telling the story of an aging Viet Nam era war widow in “Chesapeake” or sharing his own personal journey with addiction in “the Bottom.” But just when you think things may be getting a bit too heavy he belts out “My Garden State” his tongue and cheek ode to New Jersey. Framed by music that is informed by American folk, country and roots rock, Murphy strives to peel away the layers and go deeper in search of that place where the truth lives, exposing it, often from a unique and unexpected perspective.
