A member of the Florida-based collective SCAR Mafia, Iowa emcee Young Tripp has teamed up with beat maker extraordinaire Big Vern, to create Tripp’s first ever venture into the solo world, “Dead Flowers.”

Vibe Magazine’s 2007 “Best Rapper in Iowa”, Tripp uses “Dead Flowers” as a canvas on which to paint the plight of a young man mired in a tug-of-war between the pressures of street life, and the responsibilities of fatherhood. “Dead Flowers” is an uncensored probe into Tripp’s life that spares no details. From detailed accounts of a violent adolescence, to the struggles of raising children alone in the absence of a drug addicted wife, to his ongoing bouts with regret, and clinical depression, Tripp leaves no stone unturned on this opus.

From it’s opening track “Nowhere” Tripp begins to paint the picture of hopelessness as seen through the eyes of the misguided youth of the most poverty stricken areas of Des Moines, Iowa. This sentiment is further expressed on the albums lead single “American Dreamz” where Tripp details the effects of poverty on a marriage and family, and gives justification to his criminal activity. As the tracks first verse concludes, Tripp wraps up a conversation with his oldest daughter; “Gotta improve this, I gotta do something/ baby give me a kiss Daddy bout to go huntin….She said, don’t forget to kiss my dolly ‘for you go/ muah! Goodbye Dora, hello corner, Im back.”

This album does stick its head out of the darkness at times when Tripp just decides to display his overall mastery of the English language, and ability to craft uncanny or unorthodox punch lines. On the song “Cry” Tripp states “Bananas (clips) turn fruits into vegetables, homie I squash what you said on them beets with the burner, and bodies gon turnip…” Or from the braggadocios “The Loop” “….Yall don’t understand me cuz I don’t got bling on, your bitch I’ll still bring home/ act norm, my rap form is Yao Ming on/ platforms pussy Im too tall to swing on.”

“Dead Flowers” is diverse but make no mistakes, this is a very serious and personal album. As a listener just when you think things are about to lighten up, Tripp and Big Vern dig back in with a chilling track like the vengeful death promise “Take Your Life pt. II”, or the emotional account “Wonderful.”

Young Tripp’s “Dead Flowers” is the type of album that you pop in, and let ride. This is an album void of “filler”. Every song has a purpose, and every song is on point both lyrically and sonically. Tripp’s lyrical prowess coupled with Big Vern’s outstanding production make “Dead Flowers” the type of album that never seems to find it’s way out of your deck.
