With a unique sound that subtly balances sexy blues, fiery world sounds and stirring yet delicate ballads of lost souls and desperate times, Myriad’s new album is not something that can be easily overlooked.
From blues on the bouzouki to bluegrass on the cello, Myriad are not afraid to move beyond the traditions from which they have come. This has resulted in a style of music that is not easily categorised. Co-produced by Myriad and Peter Winkler and recorded at Melody Lane Studios, the album has stretched both the writing skills and performance abilities of the duo with new sounds being introduced at every turn.
Gordon Wallace and Hannah Croke are renowned for their ability to play multiple instruments including cello, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonica, bodhran and stomp box. With stunning dexterity, these instruments support Hannah’s powerful vocals that belt out the duo’s poetic tales with a sound that does not reflect her tender age of 23.
However, despite this power, the performance of Myriad on the album, and indeed on stage, is an intimate one. Myriad creates a feeling that you are being sung to personally, through barely affected vocals that sit right at the front of your speakers. Behind this sits Gordon’s subtle and unique guitar, providing an often mesmerising mix of rhythm and melody. Alternately, the strange sounds of distorted banjo reflect a darkness of lyrics and style that is inherent throughout the album.
Having previously performed in bands together, Gordon and Hannah first collaborated as a duo in January 2003 after a year of mutual songwriting and tape-sending from across the globe. When both in Australia once more, Myriad started playing in Sydney venues and festivals. In recent years, they have also performed at the Merry Muse in Canberra, and their festival appearances include the Illawarra Folk Festival, The Woodford Folk Festival, the Music at the Creek Festival, the Newtown Festival, the Haweksbury National Fiddle Festival and the St Albans Folk Festival.
This year they have already performed at both the Chewton (VIC) and Ilawarra Folk Festivals as well as numerous gigs. Myriad also supported several international artists on their tours to Australia including Andy Irvine, Mozaik, Bohola, Kila, The Emily Smith Band, Alistair Hulett and Michael Jerome Brown at the Illawarra Folk Club and The Harp Hotel.
